A group of alumni, highly established in their careers arranged to visit their old university professor together. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. The professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups in porcelain, plastic, glass and crystal form. Their looks varied from plain to expensive and exquisite.
Having helped themselves to the hot coffee with different cups, the professor commented:
“If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now if LIFE is COFFEE, then the JOBS, MONEY and STATUS in society are the CUPS. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life does not change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”
In today’s world, people are busier than ever with endless engagements, but less happy than before. There is nothing wrong with high activity and hard work but when you overspend all your time and energy on that, you neglect the truly important things in life.
“Imagine LIFE as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air namely work, family, health, friends and spirit and you have to balance all of them in the air. (by Bryan Dyson, CEO of Coca Cola.)
Drop WORK the rubber ball and it bounces back whilst all four balls made of glass will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. Hence, there is a need to strike a balance altogether.
However as work plays a vital role in balancing the other 4 balls for most of us, always adopt ways by which you could do your job more effectively and add a lot of value to it. Commit some time to read, relax, think, meditate and pick up new ideas, so as to learn and grow. If you do not sharpen your axe constantly, we will become dull and lose your effectiveness and thus add little values to the lives of other people.
To manage the other 4 balls, start a GARDEN of your daily living.
