The HUMBLE Lemon

Lemon is an oval shape citrus fruit commonly used as a beverage and a flavor-enhancer for some dishes. Citric acid gives it its acidity taste.  This acidic component becomes a weak acid and the other components become alkaline upon entering the stomach. In pH term the acid base of 3 is pushed up to 9 (shares the high alkalinity as watermelon). Compared it with most fruits and vegetables within the range of 6.5 to 7.

NUTRITIVE Values of Lemon : Per 100 gm.
  • Vitamin B : Thiamine .04 mg;
  • Riboflavin : Trace;
  • Vitamin C : 50 mg;
  • Calcium : 40 mg;
  • Phosphorus : 22 mg;
  • Carbohydrates : 8.7 gm;
  • Protein : .9 gm;
  • Calories : 32
HEALTH BENEFITS:
Vitamin C

Lemon is especially appreciated for its high Vitamin C content. When Vasco da Gama made his voyage round the Cape of Good Hope, nearly two-thirds of his crew died of scurvy.  In the present era, the recurrence of such a disaster is no longer possible with the wide spread of fruits available. Innumerable boatmen moving in sea have saved their lives by bringing lemon along their trips.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in the synthesis of collagen in the tissues, cartilages and bones and being anti-inflammatory. For weight management purpose it can accelerate the burning of fat. As it does not limit the coagulation of blood in case of injuries, the blood flow is more fluid and can expedite recovery.

Other benefits:
  • As a natural antiseptic, it destroys harmful bacteria found in the cuts and infected area by activating the white cells and strengthening the body’s immunity.
  • For toothache, apply fresh lemon juice on the painful area to reduce infection.
  • For skin problems like acne and eczema, leave some lemon juice on the skin and allowed to dry for 15 minutes and then remove with water and olive oil added. This can be applied for the removal of blackheads, freckles and wrinkles too.
  • When applied to hair after rinsing, it gives shine and volume to your hair as blood circulation is intensified.
  • Helps to prevent and cure osteoarthritis.  Even in pregnancy, it will help to build bone in the child.
  • Helps to prevent diabetes and other renal problems. As a diuretic, it gives relief in kidney and bladder disorders.
  • Helps in preventing the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Potassium in lemon (more than grape and apple) nourishes the brain and nerve cells, strengthens the blood vessels and prevents hemorrhage especially for patients with high blood pressure and other cardiac problems.
  • It provides a natural strengthening agent to the liver enzymes when they are too dilute. Also, more enzymes can be made out of fresh lemon juice than any other food element. When the liver removes uric acid and other toxins from the bloodstream, it converts them to free radicals and its antioxidant properties (eg. flavonoid, ascorbic acid) can act as the neutralising agent.
  • The ascorbic acid also prevents stomach cancer or damage to the stomach lining even for those who are suffering from peptic ulcers. Calcium carbonate - synthesized from lemon juice in the stomach helps in neutralizing the acid. Other contents like pectin and fiber ameliorate the pain and inflammation in the esophagus.
Note: However, in patients suffering from acid reflux, the acidic contents of the stomach which contains inactive pepsin can get push up to the esophagus and the throat. Coming into contact with lemon's acidic contents there, it gets activated and breaks down the protein present in the tissues of the esophagus and the throat to cause damages.
  • The bowels are aided in eliminating waste more efficiently thus controlling constipation and diarrhea.
  • After barbecuing your seafood and meat, remember to spray some lemon juice to eliminate as much as 70% of carcinogenic content.  Squeezing lemon juice on meat, potatoes, beans and even rice adds an acidic burst of flavor, and an extra shot of vitamin C to enable higher absorption of iron in these foods.

Application -

Instead of having tasteless tap water, enhance with lemon for a refreshing flavor and health purpose. Though lemon water can be drunk at any time, it is advisable to drink this preparation 20 minutes before your meals to prevent any reactions that can be caused by the contents of your food. Though it can be diluted according to taste, the guideline is as follows:

+  If you are in good health and weigh less than 150 pounds, squeeze the juice of one half a lemon (one ounce) into a glass of purified water and drink this mixture twice a day. (one whole lemon a day)

+  If you weigh over 150 pounds, squeeze the juice out of an entire lemon (two ounces) into a glass of purified water and drink this mixture twice a day. (two whole lemons a day)
Warning: One should note take concentrated lemon juice to avoid injuries to the enamel of teeth. It is recommended to drink it using a straw to prevent such damage.

Lemon has been proven to be a blessing for mountaineers when there is a lack of oxygen and coping with breathing difficulties. The first man to set foot on Mt Everest - Edmund Hillary admitted that his victory was much attributed to this lifesaver. Do not forget to bring along this humble friend on your next mountain trek.

Health benefits of WOLFBERRY

Cultivated along the fertile floodplains of the Yellow River for more than 600 years, Ningxia wolfberry has earned a reputation throughout Asia for its premium quality and high production.  The name ‘wolfberry’ is derived when farmers spotted wolves feasting on the berries during the prime harvest time.

Traditional uses

Wolfberries are commonly used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for therapeutic purposes and as common recipes in households.  The people who consumed this fruit were found to live free of common diseases like arthritis, cancer and diabetes, and their life expectancies extended above 100 years in some instances.  Clinical study carried out on the immune, physiological and biochemical indexes of the blood of aged volunteers indicated that the wolfberry caused the blood of aged volunteers to noticeably revert to a younger state.

Its rich counterparts, ginseng and lingzi with some similar antioxidant properties, are not within the reach of most common folks.  Also, ginseng is considered too strong for continuous use, and large amounts may not be suitable for people with high blood pressure or heart disease.  In comparison, the wolfberry has no known risk from continuous use on limited feed.

Nutrient contents

Since the early 21st century there has been rapidly growing attention for wolfberries for their nutrient value and antioxidant properties as required for our body’s daily macronutrient needs.  The content of this fruit comprises 68% carbohydrates, 12% proteins and 10% each of fibre and fat, yielding a total caloric value of 370 per 100 gm serving.  Soybean is in the same league, except its caloric value is only 137 per 100 gm.

Wolfberry’s diverse and richness in micronutrients has won it accolades as an exceptional health food which include:
  • 11 essential and 22 trace dietary minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, germanium and selenium
  • 18 amino acids
  • 6 essential vitamins like Vitamin B, Vitamin C, beta-carotene
  • 8 polysaccharides and 6 monosaccharides
  • 5 unsaturated fatty acids, including the essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega 6) and alpha-linolenic acid (precursor of omega 3)
  • beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols
  • 5 carotenoids, namely beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, lycopene and cryptoxanthin

Health benefits

+  Wolfberry is reported to have the potential to improve damage to the retina by lowering the oxidative stress that the eye undergoes as a result of type-2 diabetes. Its high antioxidant activity is very beneficial in protecting against oxidative stress caused by environmental stimuli and genetic mutations as well.  This helps to prevent age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy as phytochemicals protect the retinal pigment epithelial cells from hyperglycemia or high glucose problem.

+  Wolfberry is effective in protecting the liver as experiments carried out on mice found the alcoholic extract of this fruit inhibited tumor growth by 58%, and its protein displayed an insulin-like action known to be effective in promoting fat emulsification and reducing blood sugar.

+  Leucine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained from external sources, present in small quantities in plant and animal food, and is a natural component of breast milk. In general, it supports the immune function, burns fat and builds muscle.  After its conversion of leucine into HMB, it can lower total and LDL cholesterol levels in blood.  Not only do bodybuilders and other athletes like the idea, cancer, AIDS and muscular dystrophy patients can use it to prevent muscle-wasting too.

+  In one study on a group of cancer patients, the wolfberry triggered an increase in both lymphocyte transformation rate and white blood cell count. This is likely due to the germanium found in the fruit which is capable of inducing the body cells to produce “interferon” which can regulate the immune system to fight against the virus and cancerous cells.  It also has an effect of up-taking 10 times more oxygen to the blood cells to help with clearing body toxins and expedite recovery. Another study conducted showed its most important constituent, Lycium barbarum polysaccharide inhibits the proliferation of HeLa cells by inducing apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway.

+  A separate study involving a group of 50 people with lower-limit white blood cell counts showed the intake of wolfberry increased phagocytosis and the titre of serum antibodies. Unhealthy levels of titre of serum antibodies have long been associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

+  In another study, consumption of wolfberry leads to a strengthening of immunoglobulin A levels. A decline of which is one of the signs of aging.  Hence, an increase in these levels suggests that it may enable injured DNA to better repair itself and ward off tissue degeneration and thus retard premature aging.

+  As we grow older, the levels of lipid peroxide in our blood increase, whilst levels of health-protecting antioxidants, like superoxide dismutase (SOD) decrease. In a clinical study of people who consumed doses of wolfberry, SOD in the blood increased by a remarkable 48%, hemoglobin increased by 12% and lipid peroxide levels dropped by a whopping 65%.

+  For lung disorders, the fruit moisturises the lungs and relieves a dry cough.

Safety issues

*Cup of wolfberry tea Two published case reports described elderly women who experienced increased bleeding, expressed as an elevated INR, after drinking quantities of wolfberry tea. Further in vitro testing revealed that the tea inhibited warfarin metabolism, providing evidence for possible interaction between warfarin and undefined wolfberry phytochemicals.

*  Atropine, a toxic alkaloid occurs naturally in wolfberry fruit. The atropine concentrations of berries from China and Thailand are variable, with a maximum content of 19 ppb, below the likely toxic amount. That may be the reason why Chinese physicians recommend taking a handful of about 10 dried one per day.

*  With its long history as a food and a herbal medicine, there has been practically no adverse reports other than a few cases of allergic reactions.  Even pregnant women can take it in an appropriate quantity.

*  Over-dosage problems? Its beta-carotene content can cause harmless yellowing of the skin which disappears once consumption is reduced.

VIVA Corner

VIVA OQ care has 2 key ingredients Lutein and Zeaxanthin (belongs to the carotene family) that the body cannot synthesis and must be imported as they are known to be effective in reducing risk of macular degeneration. A third ingredient, lycil fructus or wolfberry extract is also found in this wonderful product.

C.O.C.O.N.U.T - The tree of LIFE

Coconut TreeEarly Spanish explorers called it coco, which means “monkey face” because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resembles the head and face of a monkey.  The term coconut can refer to the entire coconut palm, the seed or the fruit (not botanical).
Unlike other fruits, coconuts are all organic as the fruits are high up the trees, whilst the husk and shell are so thick to be contaminated by external impurities.

Found across much of the tropic and sub-tropic area, the coconut is known for its great versatility as seen in the many domestic, commercial and industrial uses of its different parts. It also has cultural and religious significance for users in many societies.

Common uses

On many islands it is noted to be the staple diet and provides the majority of the food consumed, as it provides a nutritious source of meat, juice or water, milk and oil that has fed and nourished a third of the world population for generations.

+  The oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking and frying.
+  The oil is also widely used in soaps and cosmetics, as well as a cure for several illnesses.
+  The clear liquid coconut water within is a refreshing drink and can be processed to create alcohol.
+  The husks and leaves can be used as material to make a variety of products for furnishing and decorating.

Nutritional properties

Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fiber, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals with much health benefits over and beyond the basic nutrients. It is relatively high in vital minerals such as potassium, iron, phosphorus and zinc.

Of special interest is its oil extract which possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other dietary oil and is extensively used in traditional medicine among Asian and Pacific populations to earn the coveted title “Tree of Life”.

* Coconut meat/flesh

Like most nut meats, coconut meat contains less sugar and more protein than popular fruits such as bananas, apples and oranges. Young coconuts are likened for the soft pulps and sweet juices, more on carbohydrate and mixed types, whilst mature coconuts offer firm meat and cream, best for protein types. Both are declared fat and cholesterol free.

* Coconut juice/water

The juice contains high level of electrolytes effective in preventing dehydration especially in cases of diarrhea or strenuous exercise, to substitute for an isotonic drink. The electrolyte - potassium in the body controls the nerve and muscle functions, maintains water balance, converts blood sugar into glycogen and involves in energy production.

A deficit of which may develop symptoms like: muscle weakness, lack of energy, muscle cramps, numbness, nausea, vomiting, slow reflexes and abdominal cramps. For this reason, in some remote areas of the world, it is administered intravenously for short-term relief in hydrating critically ill patients and in emergency situations. Note low electrolytes can also be a cause of hypertension.

Potassium is found abundantly in fresh fruits and vegetables such as legumes and banana. However, coconut water contains more potassium than the banana. A medium size banana yields 420 mg of potassium whilst a cup of coconut water 600 mg of potassium.
However, note high potassium can also be linked to certain health problems like dehydration, type 1 diabetes and internal bleeding. A buildup can be life threatening when your kidneys fail or do not function properly and thus unable to remove excess potassium from your body.

* Coconut oil

Coconut oil is the fatty oil extracted from the coconut meat which contains less fat than many oilseeds and seeds eg. almonds, and noted for its high amount of medium-chain saturated fat. However, modern research has shown that not all saturated fats are alike and that the fatty acids in coconut oil, the medium chain triglycerides called lauric acid, do not raise serum cholesterol or contribute to heart disease, and are in fact very healthy.  On the contrary, some 98 – 100% of all the fatty acids we consume from animals and plants are long chain fatty acids that pose threat to our health if taken excessively.

Some comparisons between them are as follows:
  • Easier to digest (takes only three-step process to be turned into fuel as compared to other fats that have to go through a 26-step process)
  • Not readily stored as fat
  • Antimicrobial and antifungal
  • Smaller in size, allowing easier cell permeability for instant energy
  • Converted into energy at liver level instead of being stored as fat
  • It does not form harmful by-products when heated to normal cooking temperature like other vegetable oils do. Taken in large amounts, there is no discomforting side effects as it is completely non-toxic.

Overall health benefits:

In traditional medicine around the world coconut is used to treat a wide host of health problems. In modern times, the application is mostly by using its oil extract. Published studies in medical journals show that it can treat numerous health issues including:

*  Anti-bacterial/fungi/virus - works as a natural antibiotic by disrupting the lipid coating on the pathogens and thus:

  • Kills viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, Hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS.
  • Kills bacteria that cause abscesses, toothache, throat infections, gum disease and cavities,
  • Kills bacteria that causes  tuberculosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, ulcers, urinary tract infections, syphilis and gonorrhea.
  • Kills fungi and yeasts that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush and diaper rash.
  • Expels or kills parasites like tapeworms, lice and giardia.
*   Nervous system -

Recent research has shown that the brain actually creates its own insulin to process glucose and power brain cells. As the brain of an Alzheimer’s patient loses the ability to create its own insulin, the ketones from coconut oil could create an alternate source of energy to help repair brain function. There are cases where Parkinson's disease reported remarkable improvement with it too.

*   Metabolic system -
  • It provides a nutritional source of quick energy to enhance physical and athletic performance.  Those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome may find some relief too.
  • It is beneficial in losing weight as it helps to burn fat and calories as well as curbs appetite.
  • The body can utilize its low calories to produce energy instead of storing as body fat.
  • Thyroid sufferers due to hypothyroidism can use it to increase body metabolism.
*   Digestive system -
  • Improves digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, minerals (eg. calcium and magnesium) and amino acids.
  • By eliminating the bad bacteria in the gut, it aids in the repopulation of floras. Hence, problems associated with mal-absorption syndrome, constipation, cystic fibrosis, ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers and digestive disorders can be reduced.
  • If coconut oil is taken together with omega-3 fatty acids, its effectiveness doubles as they are readily available to be digested and used by the body.
  • Improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose that may relieve symptoms and reduce health risks associated with diabetes. Its high content in potassium, magnesium and fluids protect against kidney disease and bladder infections. It may even reduce the risk or dissolve any kidney stone.
  • Relieves stress and reduces symptoms associated with pancreatitis, gallbladder and liver diseases. This is because it does not require the pancreatic enzymes to break it down, thus a relief on this organ.
*   Musco-skeletal system -
  • Improves calcium and magnesium absorption and supports the development of strong bones and teeth, giving protection against osteoporosis. Also helps to prevent periodontal disease and tooth decay.
  • At cellular level, it reduces inflammation and supports tissue healing and repair. For instance, it may work to relieve pain and irritation due to arthritis.
*    Cardiovascular system -
  • It contains saturated fats that not only increase the healthy cholesterol but also help convert the LDL “bad” cholesterol into good cholesterol, thus may promote heart health and lower the risk of heart disease. Triglycerides are expected to drop correspondingly.
*    Immune system -
  • Not only it does not deplete the body’s antioxidant reserves like other oils do, it is a protective antioxidant that supports and aids immune system function. At the same time, it improves utilization of essential fatty acids and protects them from oxidation. In this way, it helps to protect the body from harmful free radicals that promote premature aging and degenerative diseases.
  • Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is known to reduce candida, fight bacteria and create a hostile environment for viruses. Many diseases today are caused by the overgrowth of bad bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites in the body.
*   Endocrine system -
  • May relieve symptoms associated with prostate enlargement, epileptic seizures and support thyroid function.
  • Studies have found that coconut oil may be an excellent fat to consume during menopause and also may have positives effects on estrogen levels.
*   Skin/hair protection -
  • The fatty acids (caprylic and lauric) in coconut oil reduce inflammation internally and externally with their high antioxidant contents.
  • Blends well with the natural chemicals on the skin, its oil can be applied as a moisturiser to prevent infection, relieve dryness and flaking. Frequent use can reduce symptoms associated with skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. Even those without skin disorders can use to prevent wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots.
  • Protects against damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun, and thus promotes healthy looking hair and complexion. It has been traditionally used to control dandruff
Recommendation

As quality of coconut oil in the market varies considerably, avoid those low-quality ones, which are processed by chemical extraction using solvent extracts. Such oils produced are faster, low-cost and deliver higher yields, but contain chemical residues with many being hydrogenated, bleached and deodorized and thus altered from its original form.  On the contrary, high-quality coconut oil is the healthiest choice. It is a much safer alternative to other popular oils such as canola oil, where most of its omega-3s are transformed into trans-fats during the deodorization process, which increases the dangers of chronic diseases. In fact studies have clearly shown that traditional Asian cultures that take significant amounts of coconut in their diet do not suffer from modern diseases seen in western cultures that promote a low-fat diet.

Natural TOXINS in common food

In Europe, more than 20 people have died and some 2000 others have fallen ill from consuming raw salads that are contaminated with E. coli bacteria.  The culprit is believed to be bean sprouts where such bacteria hide well in the plant or its seeds.

To ensure safety, cooking vegetables under high temperature can destroy pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, listeria and campylobacter, However veterinary drugs, pesticides and heavy metals like copper and arsenic may remain even after thorough washing and cooking.

Some of the foods we take daily may contain naturally occurring toxins and should be watched closely by certain people.

Almond

+  As a popular snack and pastry ingredient, almond is a rich source of vitamin E, containing 24 mg per 100 g. It is also rich in dietary fiber, B vitamins, essential minerals (eg. calcium), phytosterols and monounsaturated fat – all capable of lowering LDL cholesterol.
+  It can help to overcome stress and depression. Other potential health benefits include improved complexion and possibly a lower risk of cancer. Lactating mothers can take to increase milk production.

+  Never eaten raw as the bitter almond contains trace of lethal cynide in this state and takes only 50 unprocessed pieces to kill a person.  Heat is always applied to destroy its toxicity.

Cherry and peach

Latest studies show that at least one in four women is struggling with arthritis, gout or chronic headaches. A daily bowl of cherries could ease your ache, without the stomach upset so often triggered by painkillers. Enjoy 20 cherries (fresh, frozen or dried) daily, until your pain disappears. The research revealed that anthocyanins, the compounds that give cherries their brilliant red color, are anti-inflammatories 10 times stronger than ibuprofen and aspirin. Anthocyanins help shut down the powerful enzymes that kick-start tissue inflammation, and thus can prevent as well as treat, many different kinds of pain.

A medium peach 75 g (2.6 oz), has 30 Cal, 7 g of carbohydrate (6 g sugars and 1 g fibre), 1 g of protein, 140 mg of potassium, and 8% of the daily value (DV) for vitamin C. Peach allergy or intolerance is a relatively common form of hypersensitivity to proteins contained in peaches and related fruit like almonds. Symptoms may occur like oral allergy syndrome to systemic symptoms, including gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms.

Both are known to contain highly poisonous compounds in their leaves and seeds. When their seeds are crushed or chewed, they release cyanide.  Symptoms of mild poisoning include headache, dizziness, confusion, anxiety and vomiting.  Larger doses can lead to difficult breathing, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and kidney failure. Reactions can include coma, convulsions and death from respiratory arrest.

Tomato

Tomato is known to be rich in lycopene, known to help prevent prostate cancer and lower risk of breast cancer, but must be cooked to release this component abundantly.

However, the leaves and stem of the tomato plant contain a chemical called glycoalkaloid, which causes extreme nervousness and discomfort for the stomach. Hence, the stem can be used for cooking as flavor enhancer but must be removed during eating.  This chemical is so powerful that it is actually used as a way to control pests.

Potato

The humble potato contains vitamins and minerals, as well as an assortment of phytochemicals, such as carotenoids and natural phenols.  It is best known for its carbohydrate content (approximately 26 grams) mostly comprises starch.  Only a small but significant portion of this starch is resistant to digestive enzymes in the stomach and small intestine, and so reaches the large intestine essentially intact. This effect is similar to fibre in providing bulk and offering protection against colon cancer. Also it improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, lowers plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations and increases satiety. Vinegar potato salad chilled overnight form resistant starch crystals — that triggers the production of two hunger-halting hormones, and thus helps the body to incinerate more fat for fuel while making less fat available to stash away in fat cells.

Do not take potatoes that turn green as the green hue is due to a high concentration of the glycoalaloid poison being released from the stems and leaves when over-riped.  In serious cases, death follows after a period of weakness, confusion and coma.  Throw away green potatoes and when new sprouts appear on the surface.

Cashew nut

The fats and oils in cashew nuts are 54% monounsaturated fat (18:1), 18% polyunsaturated fat (18:2), and 16% saturated fat (9% palmitic acid (16:0) and 7% stearic acid (18:0). It is also rich in magnesium, Vitamin B1, B2 and B5, recommended for cases of nervousness and fatigue.

The nut is actually the seed of the cashew fruit, found encased in a double shell that contain toxins.  The raw cashews contain urushiol, which is the same chemical in poison ivy and can cause the body similar reaction to one experienced from poison oak or ivy.

Handling the shell or eating a nut with shell oil on it can cause the skin to itch. Those ‘raw cashews’ sold in stores have actually been steamed.  Roasted cashews are treated at high temperature to destroy the shell oil and thus do not trigger a reaction.

Chilli

Red chillis contain high amounts of vitamin C (can aid in the uptake of non-heme iron), B vitamins and very high in potassium, magnesium and iron.

The chemical capsaicin is what makes chilly spicy. Chili padi found in tropical countries are so hot that the burning sensation can be awesome when you cut the chili. Incidentally, this chemical is so strong that it is used as a paint stripper and pepper spray by police forces.

Till now is not clear if the role of capsaicin is a carcinogen, co-carcinogen or tumor promoter as there are many who swear by its ability to prevent and treat cancer.

Strawberry

As strawberry is grounded during maturity, pesticides used are easily trapped on its surface, thus voted one of the most contaminated foods, especially those grown non-organically.

For this reason, pesticide exposure causes negative impact on health. The liver’s ability to process other toxins, the cells’ ability to produce energy, and the nerves’ ability to send messages cannot function properly.

This enticing fruit also contains measurable amounts of oxalates, naturally-occurring substances found in plants, animals and human beings. When oxalates become too concentrated in body fluids, they can crystallize and cause health problems. Hence, individuals with existing and untreated kidney, liver or gallbladder problems may want to give it a miss as the detoxifying organs are already overloaded with toxicity.

Starfruit

Starfruit is loaded with potent antioxidants and vitamin C to protect our cell integrity.  It is low in sugar (fructose), sodium and acid.  Not only that, its antimicrobial activities enables it to scavenge against pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus.

However, this is one fruit like strawberries that a small percentage of the human population should avoid at all cost.  According to nephrologist, neurotoxin found in it normally can be filtered out by the kidneys but not in patients suffering from kidney failure, kidney stones or those under kidney dialysis treatment who may end up with symptoms like hiccups, numbness, vomiting, weakness, agitation, Epileptic fist, nausea and mental confusion. Fatalities have been documented in some patients as well.

Papaya for overall good health

The papaya is a native plant in the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico several centuries ago. This plant is available in most parts of the world now.
Ripe and green papayas have similar nutritional values. However, the green ones contain higher levels of potassium and papain - a powerful enzyme that facilitates chemical reactions in the body as well as provides strong defence mechanisms against invading micro-organisms like viruses, tumors, allergens, yeasts and various forms of fungus. Now we know why grandma advocates curing dengue fever with green papaya.

Nutritional benefits

A low-calorie, low sugar fruit, papaya is a rich source of antioxidants, containing both carotenes and flavonoids.

One cup of cubed fresh papaya contains 0.85 grams of protein, 55 calories and 2.5 grams of dietary fiber. Other contents as follows:

Vitamins - vitamin A – 1532 IU, vitamin C - 86 mg. Small amounts of vitamin B, E and K.

Minerals - Potassium – 360 mg, calcium 34 mg

Tiny traces of phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, iron, selenium, zinc, manganese and copper.

Health benefits

+ By eating papaya after a meal promotes digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas production and indigestion as it helps to break down proteins from food into amino acids for bodily functioning. This is especially useful to elderly with slower metabolism as their lower levels of digestive enzymes are unable to effectively digest proteins, resulting in overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract, and a lack of available amino acids for healthy maintenance.

+ Papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites. For those after a course of antibiotic, it is necessary to replenish friendly intestinal bacteria to combat against the unwanted bacteria. When the intestinal tract is well populated with friendly bacteria, the immune system can be re-strengthened to better protect against flu and cancer.

+ Not readily found amongst other plants, its fibrin content reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood cells and blood circulation vital for preventing strokes. This is great for those on long plane rides and long hours desk-bounded job.

+ Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly consumed in Mexico to determine their ability to halt breast cancer cell growth, including avocado, guava, mango, pineapple, grapes, tomato and papaya. They were evaluated on contents like beta-carotene, phenolics, gallic acid and antioxidant, and found that only papaya had a significant effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth. Another compound called isothiocyanates may restore the cell cycle to eliminate cancer. In animal experiments, it protected against cancers of the breast, lung, colon, pancreas, prostate and leukemia. Extending to humans, it should inhibit both the formation and development of cancer cells through multiple pathways and mechanisms.

+ The intense orangy-pink color of papaya is choked with cancer fighting carotenoids, especially beta carotene and lycopene which are highly reactive toward oxygen and free radicals. Studies showed an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk, as well as induces cancer cell death and promotes anti-metastatic activity.

Summary of Healing Properties
  • Revitalizes the human body and maintains energy and vitality.
  • Encourages the renewal of muscle tissue. Its anti-inflammatory properties can relieve the severity of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  • Supports cardiovascular system.
  • Revs up the immune system.
  • Helps with the digestive system, by breaking down the proteins and supporting production of digestive enzymes.
  • Treats external skin wounds that do not heal quickly by digesting unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface – use papaya peel or its ointments.
  • Prevents the cataract formation with its potent antioxidant properties.
  • Helps to lower risk of lung cancer in smokers and passive smokers with its high Vitamin A content.
  • Alleviates inflammation.
  • Helps with the nausea and constipation.
  • Benefits people suffering colon cancer and other forms of cancers and aliments of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems.

More comments

+ A slice of papaya or papaya juice each day is great too. Not to worry about too much of Vitamin A and beta carotene that can turn the skin yellowish – it will go away.

+ The seeds are known to aid digestion and the leaves are used to fight malaria with its abundant enzymes. So try out next time someone got dengue.

Does FRUITS make you FAT?

Fruits are loaded with nutrients, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and low in fat and calories that contribute to health (eg. decreasing health risks such as heart disease) and possibly retard aging. However, its high sugar content can definitely work against your weight loss progress if large quantities are ingested over an extended period.

The sugar in fruit (fructose) yields calories to your diet, but since you need calories to survive, it is still a very good choice. Weight gain occurs when calories consumed are more than those expended. Although many fruits are low in calories, eating a large volume of fruits together with other foods in your normal diet can cause caloric intake to rise if not burned off. The body is unable to identify the source of calories and treat all equally. Fructose is healthier than refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup, containing the same number of calories per serving (4 calories per gram).

Similar to galactose and glucose, fructose is a single unit of sugars and starches, belonging to the monosaccharides family. Upon entering the small intestine, it is channeled to the portal vein, and reaches the liver to be processed as blood glucose for circulation in the bloodstream.

In general, our bodies utilise glucose in three ways -

+ For energy production immediately;
+ When not in use, it is converted into glycogen in the liver or muscles;
- The liver has the capacity to store 100 grams of glycogen, ready for use for the whole body. It is able to make glycogen from fructose, lactate, glycerol, alanine and other three-carbon metabolites.
- The muscles have the necessary enzymes to convert glucose into glycogen and can store between 250-400 grams of glycogen, depending on muscle mass and physical condition. This is only for supply of energy to muscles.
+ When all of the glycogen stores are full, any surplus glucose is converted to fat by the liver and stored as adipose tissue (body-fat) anywhere in the body. Note that fatty acids can be burned as fuel but the fat cannot be converted back to glucose. As fat does not raise insulin levels, it begets a low glycemic response in most instances.

“Good” and “Bad” fruits

What is Bad?

* Dried fruits. The drying process concentrates the sugar. Forgo dried cranberries and raisins for this reason.
* Tropical fruits. Fruits such as mango and guava tend to have a higher glycemic load — containing high carbohydrates and sugar.
* Fruit juice. Generally, all of the fiber and most of the nutrients have been stripped out in the production process.
* Fried fruits. Fried desserts feature high up on the list of worst foods to eat when you are dipping something in batter that is already high in sugar and fat, and then deep frying it. Avoid pineapple and banana fritters as the layer of batter and the sugary syrup make them fattening.

What is good?

* Low-sugar fruits. Examples are avocado, olives, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, apricots and peaches.
* Canned or frozen fruits are good options when fresh produce is not available. However, be careful to choose those without added sugar, syrup, cream sauces or other ingredients that add calories.

Other considerations

+ Any food that contains sugar enhances insulin signaling and could theoretically accelerate aging. As insulin is necessary for survival, eating a diet that minimizes insulin signaling is the best way to lose weight and stay healthy. If you incorporate a healthy lifestyle (one that includes fruit) there is no such fear. Also note that fruit slows aging because of its high levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

+ Fruit should be part of a well-balanced diet that also consists of vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, nuts, beans and healthy fats. Although nutritious, eating too much fruits could lead to weight gain if you exceeded a healthy daily caloric intake. Note that fruit has almost three times the calories per serving as non-starchy vegetables, so it is easier to consume too many fruit calories.

+ Over-eating fruit is more of a concern for people who are overweight or have diabetes and need to reduce or monitor caloric content. For most people who are not overweight, the benefits outweighed any risks from eating more of it.

The HEALING fruit - pineapple

Grown well in the tropical regions, the sweet, spiky pineapple originally hails from Brazil. It is an unique member of the bromeliad family as the other members are not known to produce edible fruit. It consists of dozens of individual flowers that grow together to form the entire fruit, with each scale or eye riping from a separate flower. In fact, the more scales on the surface, the sweeter and juicier the taste.

Do not pick an unriped fruit because it stops ripening the minute is picked.  No special way of storing can help ripen it further. Also, the appearing color does not determine its level of ripeness.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Most people like pineapple for its lush, sweet and exotic flavour, but may not know that it is one of the most healthful foods available today.  It’s literally true medicine!

(1)  Potential Anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits – for easing indigestion (including rid of intestinal worms), arthritis or sinusitis.

In the 1890s, researchers began isolating and studying bromelain, a natural mixture of two proteases (protein-digesting enzymes) abundantly extracted from the stem of the fruit. Most commercially grown pineapple is sliced, canned or juiced. The remains are rich with this corrosive substance which is then extracted. Note that the flesh of a pineapple does not have the high bromelain content like the core does.  Bromelain works in these capacities due to its ability to separate amino acids and thus aids the body in digesting proteins more efficiently. Bodybuilders can take note of this point.

Even during steak preparation, it can be used for tenderizing. Together with the small bits of fiber it provides, help to de-clog the digestive and intestinal tracts, and reduce arterial plaque and blood pressure. One cup of fresh pineapple daily can cut painful bloating within 72 hours.

Thus, excessive inflammation, excessive blood coagulation and certain types of tumor growth (including breast, lung, colon, ovarian and melanoma) may be reduced by therapeutic doses of bromelain when taken as a dietary supplement. Also, its ability to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis makes it a popular remedial food for approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling. It can also prevent asthma and allergies by addressing the root cause – a hyperactive, over-sensitive immune system.

(2)  Pineapple is high in the trace mineral –  manganese, also an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. For example, the key oxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), which disarms free radicals produced within the mitochondria (the energy production factories within our cells), requires manganese.  This reaction is helpful for development of strong bones and connective tissue, especially amongst the elderly, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.

(3)  Pineapple is a good source of thiamin or Vitamin B1 that acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions central to energy production.  Other Vitamin B present are vitamin B6 and folate. Taking many antioxidants in the fruit at the same time can reduce visible wrinkles and blemishes, and lower your chances of developing cancer. According to a study conducted, it was uncovered that “The addition of bromelain increased the die off of cancer cells significantly as it has the potential of being developed as a therapeutic agent in treating malignant cancer.”

(4)  Vitamin C is a powerful water-soluble antioxidant (choose fully ripened pineapple for higher amount) that protects our body against free radicals from attacking and damaging normal cells. In some patients, it can lead to asthma attacks by causing the airway spasm, and contribute to the joint pain and disability seen in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In severely-damaged cases, it is seen to promote the artery plaque build-up of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, and turns the colon cells cancerous. In fact, this vitamin helps to metabolize fats and cholesterol.

It is also vital for the proper functioning of the immune system, often associated with the prevention of recurrent colds and flu as well as decrease in severity of infections.

Vitamin C helps build and repair bodily tissue and promotes wound healing. Its ability to enhance the uptake of amino acids (the primary building blocks and maintenance of skin, blood vessels, organs, cartilage and bones) by many folds leads to the production of more collagen.

The high vitamin C content in pineapple is good for oral health as it can reduce the risk of gingivitis periodontal disease and other gum disease.

Vitamin C and bromelain, acting jointly can reduce mucous in the throat. For this reason, it is used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus and throat operations. As such, those individuals with allergies like sinus problems should take fresh pineapple daily.

(5) Pineapple juice is a natural diuretic (reduce water buildup), enabling the body to eliminate toxins, lower blood pressure and prevent weight gain (contains minimal fat)

Our comments

Choose the fresh fruit because it has the most healing properties. Unfortunately, most of the bromelain in canned pineapple is destroyed due to the heat used in the canning process.

+  Add fresh pineapple to your morning smoothie, lunch time yogurt, any fruit and most vegetable salads.

+  As for pineapple juice, taking with some nuts makes a healthy snack.  Not only it is a mouth refresher, those with morning sickness can find relief too.

+  Ripe pineapples give off a sweet, fresh tropical smell. Avoid pineapples that give off an unpleasant odor or have any soft spots or areas of dark discoloration.

+  To enhance taste, coat with salt for a sugary taste. Also, reduces the biting effect of its enzymatic reaction on the mouth lining.

+  By taking pineapples together with amino acids, bodybuilders can achieve better results as the delivery of proteins to growing muscles is enhanced.

Other considerations

+  Individuals who are taking blood-thinning medications should inform their health-care provider before taking bromelain.

+  Foods with a low GI (Glycemic Index) of 55 or less are not likely to cause spikes in blood sugar levels, while those high on the GI scale, with scores of 70 or more, may cause these spikes. Raw pineapple has a GI score of 59, making it a medium-glycemic food.

+  While pineapple is full of beneficial fiber and bromelain to promote normal digestion, too much at one sitting leads to uncomfortable side effects in some people. If you do not normally consume a lot of high-fiber foods, the sudden intake of fiber from pineapple may upset your stomach. Having a large portion of pineapple piles tons of fiber in your digestive tract together with high amounts of bromelain may lead to diarrhea or possibly constipation.

The KING of fruits - DURIAN

This is one tropical fruit from Asia you either love its amazing taste or refuse to acknowledge its regal stature at the first whiff (total dislike) for its pungent smell.

As this smell can be so terrible many local hotels in the areas disallow their guests from bringing this fruit to their rooms to avoid complaints. Strangely, some foreigners who dare to taste are quickly won over by its awesome taste and never stop asking for more.

Unlike most fruits, the durian is left to drop from the tree, signaling it is ripe to eat. People in the local villages of South East Asia will clear the floor under the trees during harvest time and wait for up to two months just to pick up the fruit at its peak.

Health Benefits

Traditionally the durian fruit was seen as a powerful aphrodisiac, whilst women would eat the ashes from burnt durian skins to help them recover after child birth. It is believed that concoctions made from the leaves of the durian tree can be used to help reduce swelling and cure skin disease.

Contrary to popular belief, durian does not contain any cholesterol or saturated fats. Instead, nutritionists have claimed that it has health benefits like:

+  Help to reduce cholesterol and moderate blood pressure with its good mono-saturated fats
+  Cleanse the blood
+  Cure jaundice
+  Alleviate fevers
+  Rid yeast infections such as thrush as its high iron content helps the white blood cells in our body to make specific chemicals that kill off the infection.

Nutrients

Rich in protein, fibre, minerals and vitamins, 100g of the flesh provides 147 calories.

+ Its simple sugars like fructose and sucrose is a fast energy booster and revitalises the body almost instantly.
+ The durian is packed with vitamins such as Vitamins B (niacin (B3), riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6) and thiamin (B1)), C and E. Its high Vitamin C content is known to aid the body in developing resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful free radicals, helping to slow down the destruction of cells from free radicals such as pollution, smoking and aging;
+ Its high levels of essential amino acid, tryptophan metabolises into serotonin and melatonin in the body - both are neuro-chemicals that can treat sleeplessness and epilepsy. People with low serotonin levels tend to be temperamental, moody and suffer from depression whilst those with high levels are usually happy and positive-minded;
+ Rich in dietary fibre, a small durian can provide 92% of the daily fibre requirement, making it a good solution for constipation problem. The fibre can help to protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time and binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon;
+ Trace of minerals found include manganese, copper, iron and magnesium for their antioxidant and blood forming properties, and potassium for regulating heart rate and blood pressure to reduce fatigue, and relieve mental stress and anxiety.

Overeating?

+ Feasting on this highly nutritious fruit bulges your waistline as it is high in calories and carbohydrates. With an average 1 kg sized durian having close to 1,350 calories (one seed contains about 54 calories), giving you as much as 68% of the daily 2,000 calories recommended for an average adult. In healthy individuals, high carbohydrate content can help to replenish low energy levels quickly.
+ Durian contains simple sugars — sucrose, fructose and glucose, not suitable for diabetic patients who have to limit intake as the sugary element and potassium lead to a sudden rise of glucose level.
+ Using large amount of pesticides and hormones to cultivate the growth of this fruit is another worrying factor.
+ The heatiness in the durian may cause your body temperature to rise, but this does not make the fruit an aphrodisiac. We are taught from young to counteract this ‘yang’ element by drinking salt water on its husk.

As eating durians can become so addictive, people tend to overindulge. The best guide is to eat only two to three seeds at one go.

Go BANANA

When comes to health benefits, bananas are hard to beat. Available throughout the year, they are cheap, delicious and easy to eat. In many ways they help to overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions making it a must to add to your daily diet.

Health Benefits

Below are some benefits complied from online sources -

Energy booster - A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy with its three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose. It is popular amongst athletics as two bananas can provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout.

Depression - Survey conducted amongst people suffering from depression found many felt much better after eating a banana as it contains tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS - You can skip the pills and go for a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia - High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood pressure - Being high in potassium yet low in salt, it makes a perfect food to beat blood pressure and stroke.

Brain power - Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation - Its high fiber content aids in restoring normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers - Try mixing a banana milkshake with honey. Both soothe the stomach and, build up depleted blood sugar levels and re-hydrate your system.

Heartburn - It has a natural antacid effect in the body to provide fast relief to a heartburn.

Morning sickness - Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites - Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Stressed? - High in B vitamins, it helps to calm the nervous system.

Ulcers - It neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. Also, its soft texture and smoothness act against intestinal disorders

Relieve muscle cramps - High in magnesium and potassium content, these minerals help to relax the muscles and protect you from any further episodes of leg cramps.

Nutritional benefits

A medium banana contains 1.29 grams of protein, 105 calories and 3.1 grams of dietary fiber. Other contents as follows:

Minerals -

Mostly: Potassium – 422 mg, magnesium – 32 mg
Others: Phosphorus, calcium, sodium, iron, selenium, manganese, copper, zinc

Vitamins -
Mostly: Vitamin A – 76 IU, Niacin – 0.785 mg, folate – 24 mcg
Others: Vitamin B1, B2, B6, C, E and K

Hence, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THRICE the phosphorus, FIVE TIMES the vitamin A and iron, and TWICE the other vitamins and minerals. As one of the best value foods around, maybe its time to change that well-known phrase to -

‘A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!’

Should diabetic patients take bananas?

Diabetic patients are discouraged from taking too many bananas at one go as its high glycemic index can cause a sudden surge in sugar and insulin level, and danger of high potassium toxicity. Its glucose content, the most easily digestible sugar, rapidly enters the bloodstream for a quick release of energy.

A diabetic patient can consume bananas and monitor the blood sugar levels consistently. Taking together with some protein such as yogurt or eggs, can help to prevent any unwanted surge. You can also combine with nut butter as fat slows down the absorption of sugars into your blood stream.

Johns Hopkins researchers found that potassium stimulates the production of insulin and tried to establish a link with low potassium levels affecting people’s chances of developing diabetes. Those with the highest levels of potassium at the start of the study were 64% less likely to develop diabetes. Another study showed patients given diuretic drugs had issue with water and electrolyte loss that may contribute to an increase in risk of developing diabetes. However, those with problems with the kidneys or diabetic condition are probably having high potassium and should avoid foods containing this component.

Green, yellow or black?

A common practice adopted by wholesalers is to force-ripe bananas by dipping in water mixed with carbide. The consumption of these bananas is believed to cause cancer or some other infection in the stomach and should be avoided.

The process involved mixing carbide with water in a closed tank results in heat emitting. The energy generated is greater than that of gas in a LPG cylinder that can be used for gas cutting. When a bunch of bananas is dropped into the mixed water, the gas is absorbed into the bananas to expedite ripening. As most fruit vendors are rather ignorant, they tend to apply excessive carbide to hasten the pace of ripening. This chemical is toxic to the stomach, and if remaining left can cause tumors to form in our digestive system.

You can inspect the bananas before buying for naturally ripened ones are dark yellow with small black spots on the body and black stalk, whilst those which are forced to ripe with carbide are lemon yellow, green stalks and no black spots.

Do you know that the nutritional profile of bananas changes as they ripen?

Have you notice that the riper the banana is, the sweeter it tastes? This is because the enzymes found in bananas is progressively breaking down starch into simple sugars (monosaccharides, disaccharides, etc which taste sweet). Since starch has already turned into simple sugar when banana ripens it makes it easier to digest. Although according to studies, the amount of vitamins and minerals lessen as the banana ripens.  Hence, once a banana reaches the desired amount of ripeness, refrigerate to keep it from ripening further.

Recent study by Japanese researchers has found a very interesting fact about bananas. It turns out that as banana ripens it produces abundant enzymes and antioxidants that are effective anti-cancerous agent. Those with dark patches on yellow skin produces a substance called TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor) which has the capacity to combat abnormal cells. The study also shows that the darker the patches the higher the anti-cancer quality. it is eight times more effective in enhancing body’s immune system than green skin version. Use it to bake banana cake for a sweeter flavor.

Other useful tips

- Peel a banana from the bottom and you do not have to pick the little ‘stringy things’ off it which is how the primates do.

- Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

- To prevent banana from riping too fast, break up the brunch and wrap each stem in plastic wrap. That can reduce the emission of ethlene gas to slow the riping process.
-  Avoid banana at dinner as it may lead to mucus formation and disturb our digestion.

-  Consuming bananas is the universal remedy for those, who are suffering with diarrhoea. During this time, the body looses essential elements, like electrolyte and potassium which the humble banana can help to reinstate.

For aesthetic reason if you want a mouthful of white teeth, try this out.
