GREEN and WHITE Barley

CHINESE PEARL BARLEY

Chinese Pearl Barley is a tall tropical plant with mature grains enclosed by solid, pearly white, oval structures which can be used as beads for making rosaries and ornamental necklaces in some Asian societies. There are few varieties harvested as cereal crops and are traditionally believed to contain medicinal properties for diuretic, anti-swelling, pus-expelling and cooling purposes, used for treating ailments like stiff and painful joints, rheumatism, warts and eczema.

This pearl barley is barley processed to remove its fibrous outer hull (shell) and bran. Like rice grain, after harvesting it is usually polished with the nutritious bran layer removed to make it more palatable.

Health benefits

+ In comparison, wheat draws similarities in its caloric, protein, vitamin and mineral content, with the exception of some barley varieties containing high level of lysine – an essential amino acid that plays a major role in calcium absorption, building muscle protein, recovering from surgery or sports injuries and the body’s production of hormones, enzymes and antibodies.

+ Many of its traditional uses are substantiated by scientific proofs now. In the last few decades, experimental animal studies by Japanese scientists have isolated numerous active chemical components from Pearl barley which include coixol (anti-inflammatory, antihistaminic, muscle relaxant, fever reducing) and coixans (peptide-containing polysaccharides that have sugar-lowering properties). Other vital nutrients include lipids (glycolipids, phospholipids, sterols), amino acids, adenosine and thiamine.

+ It has long been suspected that the low cancer rates in southeast China could be due to a dietary staple of this nature. A drug concentrate extract from the Chinese pearl barley went on clinical trials in the United States and subsequently patented in China, United States, Canada, Japan and the European Union. This natural remedy drug has been consumed by more than 27000 patients in some 2000 hospitals in China, after proven effective against malignant tumours such as carcinomas in the lung, liver, stomach and breast.

It appears to fight cancer on many fronts. Apart from inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and promotes apoptosis, it is capable of stimulating the immune system to eliminate cancer cells. This leads to improved quality of life for cancer patients by decreasing cancer pain and preventing the loss of body weight. Without the harmful side effects, vital functions of the heart, liver, kidney and blood can continue. In fact, it can help to reduce the toxic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and drugs dispensed for cancer patients. When used in combination with surgical intervention, it helps to kill tumour cells.

A team of researchers at the National Taiwan University has recently identified 6 phenolic compounds in the hull that have strong anti-oxidant activities of varying degrees. They observed that different parts of the grain vary in their content of anti-oxidants as well, with the greatest amounts in the hull, followed by the seed membrane and the bran, and the smallest amounts in the polished grain.

Note the difference…

As mentioned, with the slight resemblance, pearled barley has been frequently mistaken as chinese pearl barley. It is important to be able to differentiate the two if you intend to consume the latter for its curative and medicinal properties.

For easy differentiation, bigger version is chinese pearl barley and the lower picture shows pearled barley.

PEARLED BARLEY

This common type of barley has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years. In the ancient times, it has been extensively used for healing purposes by the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Athletes in Greece and Rome in those days were known to eat barley bread for extra strength and energy.

A healthy drink, minus the sugar -

+ High in fibre, barley is also a kidney cleanser. Hence, diabetics should eat more barley as the fibre can prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high.

+ As a blood purifier it helps to remove toxic wastes trapped in the body cells and provide clean water to the blood vessels.

+ Great for your intestinal health as its high fibre content feeds the friendly bacteria in the colon and helps speed up the transit of fecal matter in it. In this way it helps prevent hemorrhoids and colon cancer. The propionic acid and beta glucan from barley’s insoluble fibre also help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of gallstones.

+ Eating barley regularly is a preventive step against heart disease as its fibre content and niacin (B vitamin) can lower cholesterol.

+ Its curative properties provide relief from constipation or diarrhea for those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

+ It is rich in selenium which prevents cancer and relieves symptoms of asthma and arthritis. Also a good source of manganese, copper and phosphorous.

How to use white barley

+ Malt sugar comes from sprouted barley which, when fermented, is an ingredient in beer and other alcoholic beverages.
+ Just a simple drink, cold or hot.
+ Try to eat the barley grains you find in your drink or sweet broth with bean-curd skin and ginkgo nuts.

On comparison, the calorie content of rice and pearled barley is very similar. Pearled barley is a preferred choice as it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber and slightly higher in some essential nutrients than rice, including potassium, zinc and folate. On the whole, this whole grain is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and amino acids essential for our health.

GREEN BARLEY

Also note the distinction – Green Barley which is the pure juice from young barley leaves in dried or powdered form, extracted when the plants are about a foot tall. At this age, the leaves have an intense bright green color, indicating high amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll and protein.
