SICKNESS v WELLNESS

  

It is said that your body is a temple, but that most people treat it like an out-home. On the way to get more and more to improve their lives in every aspect, they sell out one key thing that money cannot buy back or recover at huge cost and time – the PHYSICAL WELL-BEING. Most if not all people would not hesitate to set on anything in relation to accepted risks associated with drugs, surgery and other medical procedures. However, in a special report prepared by Keith Scott-Mumby MD, MB ChB, PhD entitled “Alternative Doctor” he laid his contention:




“If you have to go on taking medication for years, decades or for life, that’s not a cure! If the drug or treatment was any good, it would fix the illness, the symptoms and problem would vanish completely. You wouldn’t need on-going treatment, would you?
 
"So 99% of all drugs are worthless because they don’t fix anything; they only suppress the symptoms.” He concluded after examining over thousands of patients who are not really cured after seeking medical attention.


The FOOD industry…..

It starts off with the powerful trillion dollar food industry attempting to lure us with more delicious foods. Heavy advertising constantly reminds the ‘target market’ not to forget to load up their products. For most people piling up on foods can end up being obese and overweight. Taking charge of one's life is no longer easy with so much temptations around us.


The HEALTHCARE industry....


So what happen next when you are sick after taking in too much toxic substances from foods and the body system starts to break down? No one has doubt about seeing a doctor right? However, are you getting the right treatment for your health problem?

In most instances, a patient is not receiving a prescription for the best drug or treatment available for the specific ailment. Why?
 
In practice, general practitioners learn about new drugs and treatments from a special type of salesperson called a ‘detail representative’ in the pharmaceutical industry. This person goes round to hand out free samples and handsome rewards for the products dished out by his company. 

Comparatively speaking, the so-called ‘branded’ drugs are usually costly and outdated whilst the generic drugs are a fraction of the cost and are formulated or prescribed more recently. Sad to say, most physicians seem to tip the scale between profits and patients in favor of profits.

Drug companies actually spend enormous sum marketing their products more than their research and development cost. Even in doing research, is more profitable to produce drugs that consumers have to use on long term basis. Hence, the products are targeted to treat symptoms of diseases rather than the causes or the cures. As expenses incurred to improve wellness (eg. fitness training, supplements) are disallowed for reimbursement, most patients have no choice but to depend on such drugs dispensed to keep going.

NO WAY OUT???

"Nature can fix anything!" exclaimed the above mentioned doctor. 


"Is so wonderfully created that nothing in our make up is not amenable to repair, healing and restoration. It has been wisely said that our bodies are defended from sudden death every single day. Along with all living creatures we are endowed with a number of key regulatory mechanisms for repair and maintenance purposes. Every time trouble brews from within gets fixed up without our knowledge."
 
It is only when the defences are overworked that we start to experience some health problems. By the time we are aware of any symptom, the defences may have already broken down and our health is being impaired.

*  our skin helps to prevent dehydration and excrete toxins;
*  our immune system protects and destroys raiders;
*  our kidneys balances the internal acid-alkali regulation and eliminates toxins;

Working in harmony, we are able to not merely live, but live well, thrive and enjoy our wellness experience, even though we live in a world of dangerous pathogens and potentially deadly chemicals. It is only when these healing mechanisms are not ticking they we are at risk of falling sick.
 
Causes of breakdown –

There are many factors which can block healing and when too many of them are present at the same time, the health and wellness process breaks down easily and DIE-EASE occurs.  This usually spans over a period of time and the body’s own protective defence mechanisms could not take it any further. The accumulated burdens can be termed 'total body load'There is a tolerable limit to each stressor and only by far exceeding does one move into overload territory and begin to feel unwell.

+  By adopting healthy lifestyle like take proper diet, reduce stress, do some exercises – the natural curative and restorative mechanisms can function again and the symptoms can be switched off, rid the disease process and regain wellness.
 
+  However, more often than not, many negative factors can befall the body at the same time making it difficult to cope at the same time: fatigue, bad food, a virus attack, work stress, and strong urge to sleep to trigger a breakdown.
 
+  It does not matter whether the overload factors get added together through time or whether they happen all at once.  All that counts is when the total score hits a certain level, trouble begins.  This explains why at times you can meet a health challenge without any effect and at other times become sick.
 
+  Individual variations are a factor of genetic composition and countless operating mechanisms within the body, all of which perform differently. Given our uniqueness, some of us are formidably tough and can withstand almost anything without buckling under the strain whilst others are weak and fragile and can easily fall prey to illness.
 
+  Overload can be cause of any disease symptoms – from minor problem like allergy to major ones like mental disorder, heart disease, ulcers and cancer.  The outcome can vary with mixed symptoms and few occurring diseases. This is especially so if the overload is prolonged or severe, affecting more and more organ tissues.
 
+  Not even the medical practitioners realised that the same symptom can happen in different part of the body. For instance, a milk allergy or intolerance can attack the lungs to cause asthma, hit the bowel to inflict abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and vomiting, and hurt the joints to cause aches and stiffness. It may also shift through passage of time.  One may develop rashes as a kid, hay fever in teenage, migraine in adulthood and arthritis at older age.

+  Medical research have discovered that many diseases arise from defective genes that can be turned on or off and do not really control inheritance at all.  This is termed medically as “gene expression” — whether there is any manifestation  which is influenced by factors like complex environmental triggers, diet, chemicals and minerals.  By reducing the load, our body can let the ‘good genes’ (eg. youthfulness, longevity) express and suppress the “bad genes” (eg. cancer and heart disease).  It is really about interaction between our genes and the environment.
 

Our present model of cancer is that we have rogue cells in our bodies all the time.  A fully functioning immune system can take care of these abnormal cells.  However, when the immune system is being compromised due to tremendous burden from the stress factors, some of these cancerous cells are able to rear their ugly heads and terrorise normal cells.


The WELLNESS industry….

A new industry is emerging – an industry dedicated to WELLNESS that will eventually surpass the existing healthcare industry hitherto dedicated to SICKNESS. This includes nutritional supplements, genetic engineering, fitness clubs/equipment, health food products, health food restaurants and weight loss products.
 
The sickness business is ‘reactive‘ where no one likes to be a customer. The wellness business is ‘proactive‘ where people volunteer to be customers – either to stay healthy or avoid becoming customers of the sickness business. Creating the awareness of being healthy marks the distinction of client (educated) over customer (mere buyer) relationship.

What is the use of preserving the length of life but prolonging the agony of living pain? Also, unhealthy individuals can be a burden to the society if social welfare had to be provided. They do not have the energy to fully enjoy their lives, work and families. Most of their time and money are spent on treating some symptoms only and consuming more unhealthy food and more sickness products and services.

On the contrary, time and money spent on wellness products and services can only make a person feel stronger, healthier with cheery, youthful look. This is important in maintaining quality of life daily on the job or at home.



Scientists have found that newly discovered nutrients in plant food can contribute to reducing the risk of many common diseases and aging. Vitamins and minerals are capable of coping with cardiovascular disease and cancer, both deemed top killers now. Taking good supplements is like buying future insurance for our health.

Conclusion


Total body load is a complex multi-factorial matter.  Eliminate the controllable factors so the body can handle the uncontrollable factors in a better manner. For instance, it is not easy to reduce emotional stress, chemicals and stressful work condition.  Dieting is possible if one is disciplined enough. Eliminating bad foods alone can bring a dramatic turnaround.  Taking breaks as and when time permits is important as our body needs recovery time to achieve higher performance levels and purpose in life.


Understanding the cause of being sick is due to the overloading factor, we do not simply run to the physicians for quick fix. They are capable of offering high-tech tests, powerful drugs and vague advice at best.  Each year, at least a few hundred thousand die, not from the illness they suffered, but from the medical treatment received. It refers to death induced by a doctor’s activity, manner or therapy — due to medical error, adverse drug reactions, infection picked up in hospitals etc. Do not expect them to guide you on proper path by delving into related topics like basic nutrition, lifestyle changes, stress management and diet supplementation.


As for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) frequently criticised for being unscientific and unproven even though there are a fair amount of supporting scientific evidence. The need for proof is keeping some people away from options that could possibly help or save their lives. Try alternative method of natural healing if possible. Only when condition is critical as to threaten life that one should opt for any surgery. Every part of the body should be preserved for as long as we are alive!!

Drugs - MEDICATED or COUNTERFEIT?

 

MEDICATED DRUGS


In 2003, Dr Allen Roses, the Vice President of Genetics in the UK pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) confessed that “the vast majority of drugs (more than 90%) only work in 30 – 50% of the people.”  In other words, most prescription drugs out there DO NOT work on MOST people who take them. To make matter worse, they KILL !

Examples cited as follows:

+  Drugs for Alzheimer’s disease work in fewer than one in three patients,
+  Drugs for Cancer are only effective in a quarter of patients,
+  Drugs for migraines, for osteoporosis and arthritis work in about half the patients.

FACT:  In the U.S., the odds of being killed by conventional medicine are almost 20 times (2,000%) greater than being killed in an automobile accident and almost 30 times (3,000%) greater than being killed by a gun.
 
After 9 full years of investigation, the verdict was out in early July 2012.  GSK group was guilty of committing the largest ever health-care fraud case in the world.  It agreed to settle a penalty sum of US$3 billion. The charges in question (estimated sales till settlement date) are:

-  Aggressive marketing of the anti-depressant Paxil drug for pediatric usage without approval and can cause suicide risks if taken by children (US$11.6 billion);
-  Drug Wellbutrin for sexual dysfunction and weight loss, though it was approved for depression only (US$5.9 billion);
Avandia for treating diabetic condition when its own clinical trails showed adverse results which can lead to deaths from heart attacks (US$US$10.4 billion).

What is in play?

Majority of doctors are disillusioned and getting more frustrated.  The initial intention to enter the medical profession is to cure people but only to find out that method in treating patients are drugs and surgery. This growing sentiment among doctors is that they want to offer their patients more treatment choices for curing disease than the medical system currently offers. One member of that growing number of doctors is Dr. Paul Beal.

“I want to do more for my patients than what’s offered by the pharmaceutical industry because I realized earlier on that modern medicine has become, unfortunately, more of a big business than a healing science.” — Paul Beals, M.D., C.C.N. Georgetown University School of Medicine (Course Instructor 1996-2004: Introduction to Complimentary and Alternative Medicine)

Doctors have been immersed into a marketing culture that relies on selling as many drugs as possible to the widest number of patients. The US authorities noted that GSK’s sales force literally bribed physicians to prescribe its products by giving out in kinds eg. gifts, holidays, leisure trips, shows etc. In more outrageous cases, some of the top doctors are willing to let their names go down as lead authors of ghostwritten studies for GSK drugs to gain lucrative rewards. An article published in a top journal was found to contain misrepresenting research data.

It is a common practice to engage some medical agencies to look at data from clinical trials funded by the drugmakers, discuss the findings of a drug and relates it to the treatment of a specific condition.

Following that other drugmakers fined include-

+  May 2012 – Abbot US$1.6 billion for its anti-psychotic Depakote;
+  2011 - Merck paid US$950 million for illegal marketing of the painkiller Vioxx, which caused heart attacks;
+  2010 – AstraZeneca paid US$520 million for illegal marketing of its anti-psychotic Seroquel;
+  2009 – Eli Lilly was fined US1.42 billion for its anti-psychotic Zyprexa;
+  2009 – Pfizer was fined US2.3 billion for illegal marketing of painkiller Bextra, anti-psychotic Geodon, antibiotic Zyvox and anti-epileptic Lyrica.

The fines imposed paled off compared to the revenue raked in, making Big Pharma the most profitable industry in the world. Now we know why the top 10 pharmaceutical companies’ combined profits exceeded the combined profits of all the 490 remaining companies in the Fortune 500 list!

More comments

The real money (for drug companies) is in TREATMENT. To an extent, there also is money in diagnosis, for example, mammography and blood tests for prostate cancer.  To expand this lucrative industry, there is a need to convert ‘HEALTH‘ into ‘DISEASE‘. Revenues are generated when unhealthy people are paying more to be treated of disease and chronic illness and extend to addicting people to lifetime requirements for prescription drugs.

Three potential areas commonly explored:

–  Creative marketers are roped in to engage the media with new, absurd ways to reach out to end-users through direct-to-consumer advertising for their drugs.

–   A ‘detail representative’ from the pharmaceutical industry goes round to hand out free samples and handsome rewards for the products dished out by his company to medical practitioners.

–  Drug companies have experts on their payroll who are part of the FDA’s drug safety decision panels, and who do not disclose their conflicts of interest. They are making decisions that expand the definition of disease. A classic case of this was when cholesterol numbers were lowered from 130 to 100 to instantly make 10 million more Americans diagnosable with high cholesterol so they could be treated with statin drugs. No wonder in the United States, the top 10 pharmaceutical companies raked in $1 trillion revenue which is more than the remaining 490 Fortune 500 companies!

It is a sad fact that the medical approaches that get the most attention tend to be those that are the most lucrative. When things are cheap, there often is not the commercial will and push that can be instrumental in their popularization.  Hence, even though most of the costly drugs have serious side effects, doctors keep this secret away from their patients and are not keen to recommend the lower-margin natural nutrition or even cheaper/latest generic brand products.

In recent times, when more people are turning to nutrition for health maintenance purpose, some big-time pharma are not missing the chance to share this voluminous market. An example is the popular Vitamin C largely sourced from China (produced for 80% of global demand) by them at fraction of a cost!  Check the effectiveness of your Vitamin C pills the next time your doctor dispenses to you.

COUNTERFEIT DRUGS


Definition by Wikipedia Encyclopedia:“A counterfeit medication or a counterfeit drug is a medication or pharmaceutical product which is produced and sold with the intent to deceptively represent its origin, authenticity or effectiveness. Such drug may contain inappropriate quantities of active ingredients or none, and thus may be improperly processed within the body (e.g. absorption by the body), or it may contain ingredients that are not on the label (which may or may not be harmful), or may be supplied with inaccurate or fake packaging and labeling. Medicines which are deliberately mislabeled in order to deceive consumers—including mislabeled but otherwise genuine generic drugs—are labeled "counterfeit" and considered pharma fraud.

Effects

As the products can contain hazardous, adulterants and substituted ingredients, such low-quality counterfeit medication may cause any of several dangerous health consequences including side effects, allergic reactions and fatality in the worst scenario.

Take for instance fake antibiotic where its low concentration of the active ingredients can cause bodily harm as it can stimulate the development of drug resistance in surviving bacteria. Even completion of a course of treatment is unlikely to be fully effective.
In 2007, a cough syrup made in China killed more than 500 kids who took the syrup. Apparently the producer substituted the costly active ingredient glycerine for antifreeze diethylene glycol.

Country of origin

Counterfeiting occurs throughout the world and more seen in some developing countries with weak regulatory or enforcement controls. The range is in the region of 10% – 50% worldwide for counterfeit drugs. Many of the fake drugs came from the same countries that make normal drugs, in particular China, India and some substandard facilities in Eastern Europe. Is illegal to sell fake drugs for domestic use in India, but there is no prohibition on export of counterfeit drugs. Likewise the biggest drug exporter in the world – China is not responsible for regulating pharmaceutical ingredients manufactured and exported by chemical companies. Irresponsible act right?

Circulation

An estimate of faked drugs circulating around the world is an astronomical sum of US$75 billion in 2010, rising steadily by 90% over the last 5 years. No wonder illegal syndicates are switching to selling counterfeit drugs than narcotics. Given the low manufacturing costs involved and high selling prices, the profit margins can be as high as 200% as compared to only 25% for the real stuffs and risk of being slapped with a death sentence in some countries like Singapore.

How lucrative can unscrupulous businessmen make? In 2006, a US-based firm called Albers Medical Distributors pleaded guilty to making US42 million on counterfeit Lipitor and other medications.

Tracking system

There are several technologies that may prove helpful in combating the counterfeit drug problem. An example is radio frequency identification which uses electronic devices to track and identify items, such as pharmaceutical products, by assigning individual serial numbers to the containers holding each product. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wanted to develop an electronic device system to track drugs from factory to pharmacy.


In response to the stringent control by some Health Regulatory Authorities, counterfeiters devised subtle ways to escape being caught. Faked drugs are mixed up with genuine ingredients already passed expiry date in the event a molecular test is conducted. Hidden behind the flags of western nations makes it plausible for unknown clients to order direct online with good discounts thrown in. A 2005 FDA Study of 11000 Canadian online pharmacies found that only 214 were registered to a Canadian entity.


The law is still very lenient towards counterfeiters. A Viagra counterfeiter in Britain was sentenced to 150 hours of community service and negligible hearing cost. Even in strict law-abiding Singapore, the Poison Act imposes a fine up to $10000 and a maximum of 2 years imprisonment only.

+ If the need arises -

Do not buy from unauthorised dealers any drug as they can be counterfeited. Even an original drug should be taken with care and may require prescription. Not only drugs can be counterfeited, supplements and foods are no exception. In the world of deception, many producers are sacrificing the health and lives of others to enrich themselves.

+ If can live without drugs -

Avoid them completely and stay safe in the world free of drugs. Both counterfeit and medicated drugs are destroying our bodies. Do not let our lives be ruined by products churned out by counterfeiters or pharmas for their ulterior motive.

A-B-C of Vitamins and Minerals

  

Vitamins and minerals enable our bodies to work properly.  The critical biochemical functions performed by them are found to take place on a molecular versus a cellular level.  Imagine about 10000 human cells covering the head of a pin and each cell is composed of trillion of molecules.  Medical scientists are unable to study the molecular structure of cells and how they function (cannot detect even with an optical microscope).  Hence, they choose to ignore the importance of nutrition and the effect of vitamins, minerals and other natural supplements.
 

Not all vitamins and minerals derived from the food source are equal and therefore balancing our diet is important.  Vitamins are organic substances made by plants or animals whereas minerals are inorganic elements extract from the soil and water, and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals.
 
Differences
 
Both share a common purpose – their antioxidant properties can be combined or used singly to achieve the goal of protecting our body against free radical damage.
 
-  Vitamin antioxidant spares the cell material from damage by giving the free radical one of its own electrons.

-  Mineral antioxidants attach to cell proteins called enzymes to remove free radicals through chemical reactions eg. selenium works with an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase and zinc works with superoxide dismutase (SOD).
 
VITAMINS
 
Vitamins contain no energy directly but are required for sustaining life by regulating the metabolism and assisting the biochemical processes that release energy from digested food. The chemical composition of their single catalyst molecule not altered by the reaction and can be used repeatedly, explains why only a small quantity of each vitamin is required daily.
 
As mentioned, certain vitamins help to protect the integrity of the body cells and offer antioxidant effects against free radicals (molecules which cause cells to oxidise or rust). Vitamins cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained from food source. The two categories derived are:  fat soluble and water soluble.
 
+  The fat-soluble vitamins – A, D, E, and K dissolve in fat and are stored in the body.  As Vitamin A and D are stored in the liver for future use, excessive level can cause toxicity.
 
+  The water-soluble vitamins – vitamins C and the B-complex vitamins (eg. vitamins B6, B12, niacin, riboflavin, and folate) need to dissolve in water to be absorbed.  As these vitamins cannot be stored and are excreted 4 – 24 hours later, a fresh supply has to be replenished daily.
 
Points to note –
 
+  Scientific studies have shown that taking dosages of vitamins above the RDIs (Recommended Dietary Allowances) can ward off vitamin deficiency diseases such as beri-beri, night-blindness and scurvy as well as in keeping a vibrant good health.
 
+  Lack of certain vitamins can cause an upset in the proper body system. 
An illustration is gout:
--  A sufferer with inadequate intake of Vitamin B5 produces high amounts of uric acid. 
--  A lack of Vitamin A worsens gout condition.
--  Vitamin E deficiency causes damage to the nuclei of cells that produce uric acid, causing more uric acid to form. 
In the case of a patient undergoing chemo treatment, uric acid is often released in extreme amounts, resulting in gouty arthritis.
 
+  Scientific research has proved that excesses of isolated vitamins can produce the same symptoms as deficiencies.
 
+  Synergy is when two or more vitamins are combined to create a more potent effect than individual effect. For instance, Vitamin A, C and E in combination is much potent than single vitamin.
 
+  Do not mix with drug medication as absorption of vitamins can be reduced with corresponding lower health benefit.
 
+  For optimal result, take water-soluble vitamins after meals and fat-soluble vitamins before meals.
 
+  Ensure that vitamins are extracted from food source or concentrates and not synthetized in the laboratory.
 
+  Keep the bottle containing the vitamins away from direct sunlight.  If possible use dark containers that can shield its contents properly.
 
MINERALS
 
In a nutritionally balanced diet, sufficient minerals should be found in foods rich in proteins and vitamins.  Supplementation may be more required during pregnancy, old age and sickness (malabsorption, depletion and insufficient intake of nutrients).

Minerals are needed for the proper composition of body fluids, the formation of blood and bone, the maintenance of healthy nerve function and the regulation of muscle tone. They are also essential for the proper utilization of vitamins and other nutrients. Two examples are:
-  When amino acids and potassium are fused, protein formed as in muscle. Banana contains both.
-  When iodine meets protein, amino acids are derived. Seaweed contains both.
 
In our body, proper chemical balance is achieved when the levels of different minerals are proportionate. Otherwise, it can spark off a chain reaction of imbalances that leads to illness.  Minerals can compete with one another for absorption too. 
 
Our body need larger amounts of some minerals to grow and stay healthy. Bulk minerals include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and phosphorus. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are vital for muscle function and helps to flush out excess fluids out of our cells. Taking a diuretic to lower blood pressure can result in a loss of potassium and sodium in the water outflow.


Other minerals like chromium, germanium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium and zinc are required only in minute quantities (trace minerals).

As minerals are stored mainly in the bone and muscle tissue, toxicity can occur if extremely large quantities are consumed over a prolonged period of time.

Vitamin C for beauty and health

Early discovery

Double Noble Prize winner Linus Pauling stressed for years that animal produce their own vitamin C and humans do not (lacking the enzyme in the liver), explains why our arteries can harden and face coronary death.  He led medical researchers to conclude that high dosage of Vitamin C and the amino acid lysine can reverse atherosclerosis in our heart and brain.

Dont ignore Vitamin D

  

Basic functions

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that carries both properties of a vitamin and hormone, essential for effective absorption of calcium and phosphorus.  For this reason, children need it for normal growth of bones and teeth. A severe deficiency can cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Both of these conditions cause soft, thin and brittle bones.


Not known is the importance for all ages like:


  • Boosting immune system,
  • Musco-skeletal function (eg. osteoarthritis, osteoporosis)
  • Cardiovascular function
  • Respiratory system –for healthy lungs and airways
  • Brain development
  • Thyroid proper activity
  • Normal blood clotting
A deficit can cause symptoms such as: loss of appetite, insomnia, visual problems and weight loss.

+  In the 19th century, Boston’s Floating Hospital in New England sent children who developed rickets due to a lack of vitamin D (especially during winters) onboard the cruise for prolonged periods to obtain sun exposure - a natural source of this vitamin.

+  Medical research done shown that combining 1500 mg of calcium with 1000 IU given to postmenopausal women decreased the risk of bone fracture and were 77% less likely to develop cancer, primarily breast malignancy in the next 4 years.

+  Harvard School researcher, Dr Edward Giovannucci, reported that those with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to suffer heart attack, heart failure and stroke.   Adding Vitamin D can alleviate cardiac problem by lowering blood pressure and/or cholesterol, reduce inflammation and calcification in the coronary arteries.

+  Dr Mitsuyoshi Urashima, a professor of Epidemiology in Japan reported in the American Journal of Nutrition that by giving 1200 IU of vitamin D to some children resulted in less Influenza A amongst them as compared to those who did not receive.  Another Japanese study done revealed that children not receiving vitamin D were six times more likely to suffer asthma attacks.

+  A study to assess blood levels of Vitamin D levels and the risk of viral respiratory tract infection such as cold and flu in almost 200 American men and women throughout an autumn and a winter produced some interesting findings:

– those with higher levels who succumbed to flu were ill for an average of 2 days per infection;
– those with lower levels who succumbed to flu were ill for an average of 9 days per infection.

Hence, elderly especially those who are institutionalised should increase dosage of this vitamin.

+  Diabetic patients usually has a low level of vitamin D which is needed in the production of insulin.

As it is fat-soluble base like A, E and K, any extra intake is stored in the liver till converted. This includes all forms of Vitamin D supplements taken.



– Note that Vitamin D obtained from food or supplements are usually not fully active, and need to be converted by the liver into 25-D (inactive form), followed by the kidney into 1.25-D (active form).  Thus, people with liver or kidney disorders are at a higher risk of osteoporosis.

– Most medical institutions examine the blood levels of vitamin D by using 25-D inactive form as the biomarker are likely to interpret wrongly a deficiency when there are actually sufficient amount in the active form.

– The biological effect as explained by scientists is that in many illnesses, the body produces lots of interferon gamma, an immune substance that helps to ward off invading bacterial infections that can cause cancer in more serious cases.  Interferon gamma can activate our big white cells called macrophages to gobble those pathogens.  Macrophages being activated by this interferon are known to produce the active 1.25-D itself.  Hence, the importance of vitamin D on the immune functions. Another study conducted found that T cells first search for vitamin D in order to activate and unable to do so if there is not enough found.


+  Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin in response to exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVB).  What happens is that a cholesterol compound in the skin is transformed into a precursor of vitamin D.  Hence, if one can expose the face and arms to the sun for 15 minutes thrice weekly, vitamin D can be adequately stored and body cholesterol level can be reduced.

As Vitamin A is also fat-soluble, consuming large amounts over many weeks or months significantly increases your risk of toxicity. The tolerable upper limit for adults is 10,000 international units of vitamin A daily.


+   For both fat soluble vitamins, toxicity can cause one to have nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, dry skin, achy pain, reduced bone strength, nervous disorders and an increased risk of kidney stones.
