The Magical Pomegranate

Exotic and a tad mysterious (claimed to be Eve’s original apple), pomegranate originated in tropical Asia and has been grown for over 5,000 years throughout the Mediterranean, East Asia and the Middle East. It has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and rebirth throughout history. Some cultures believed it held profound and mystical healing powers. The great thing about pomegranate trees is that they enjoy long lifespan. The fruit has a round, spherical shape and contains dozens of small ruby-colored seeds.

Traditional Uses

The pomegranate has several uses in traditional medicine, including as a gargle for persistent coughs, as an antidote for fevers, diarrhoea and colic and to remove intestinal worms in children. They believed the rind of the fruit is an astringent and contains a certain amount of poison. The fruit is also used for treating bladder disturbances, strengthening gums and soothing mouth ulcers. In India the leaf of the pomegranate is used to treat cuts, as it contains a natural healing and soothing agent.

Modern uses

Given its citrus flavor and juiciness, many drinks and even foods are derived as can be seen in a great range of applications in icings, salad dressings, soups and puddings or use to flavour sauces and pickles.

Nutritional properties

Its wide adoption can be attributed to recent studies that showed the fruit contains a high amount of antioxidants called flavonoids (also known as polyphenols) that play a vital role in keeping us healthy by preventing free radicals from attacking our cells causing diseases and premature aging.

This large group of plant chemicals is known to have a wide range of beneficial actions - anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Most if not all fruits contain a certain amount of beneficial nutrients like vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and folic acid.
Pomegranate appeared on the top 10 favored list packed with a whole host of them, even overtaking green tea, red wine, cranberries and grapes.

A single pomegranate contains -

+  Approximately 40% of our recommended daily dose of vitamin C;
+  High content of vitamins A, E and folic acid;
+  Contains 3 times the levels of antioxidants found in green Tea and red wine;
+  Fat free and high in fiber.

Health Benefits

+ The heart benefits from the antioxidants by receiving more oxygen which can help to prevent heart disease. Its high dietary fibre can work on some digested fat from intestinal absorption, thus lowering the cholesterol in the blood. The juice also triggers the production of nitric oxide which keeps arteries open - crucial for proper blood flow. In this way, the arteries are prevented from clotting and thus reduces the chance of atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attacks..

In a limited study of hypertensive patients, consumption of pomegranate juice for two weeks was shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by inhibiting serum angiotensin-converting enzyme. One study showed that drinking 1.7 ounces of pomegranate juice per day lowered blood pressure by as much as 5%. This is because its high potassium content regulates body fluids and blood pressure.

+  It high fibre content acts as a natural laxative and can thus relieve constipation by adding bulk to the stools and improving peristalsis movement. However, excessive intake can cause constipation instead as tannin in it promotes lower intestinal activity and is prescribed for diarrhea.

+ Juice consumption may also inhibit viral infections whilst pomegranate extracts have antibacterial effects against dental plaque and intestinal worms.

+ Different studies have discovered that pomegranate juice acts as an enzyme inhibitor which may prevent cartilage deterioration and thus prevents osteoarthritis. On top of that, it contains Vitamin C which aids in manufacture of collagen.

+  Vitamin K found in it can treat small blood loss due to hemorrhoids, nose bleeds and bleeding gums.

+ The special polyphenols in it is beneficial in fighting certain forms of cancer including breast, lung, skin and prostate cancer. One of its compounds, ellagitannins prevents a key enzyme that normally converts certain compounds in food into carcinogens.

-  Ellagic acid in it increases the body’s built-in supply of glutathione, an antioxidant that both protects DNA and helps recycle estrogen, which protects skin cells. It also inhibits certain enzymes in ways that give cells time to divide normally.

-  Experiments on mice also showed to delay the growth of prostate cancer and stabilise PSA levels in men who have been treated with prostate cancer.

-  In colon cancer cells, the result is a whopping 85%. This can be due to at least 29% of the helpful compounds in pomegranate juice reaching your intestines intact.

+ If you currently smoke or smoked in the past, or hang around in smoky places the juice of the fruit can bolster your defence.

+ Brain cell damage and deterioration of lab rats fed with the juice was found to be reduced by up to 50%. This is good news for mental patients like Alzheimer’s.

+ Turkish researchers: Drinking pomegranate juice can improve sperm health. Male rats fed such juice for seven weeks saw their sperm cells grew in size and numbers, displayed improved mobility and were healthier. Evidence also suggested it could help regulate erectile dysfunction.

Skincare benefits

When the body is attacked by free radicals, the system is also robbed of the nutrients that are required for skin repair and renewal. If this continues, the skin becomes dull, dry and loses its elasticity, all effects that lead to premature ageing. The skin-saving benefits of pomegranates have recently been discovered by cosmetic houses, which have included the fruit in moisturizers, sunscreens and cleansers, among other products.

The Beauty of ORANGE

Most people are aware of the importance of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day as these whole foods, created by nature are rich in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes, required for healthy body functioning. To achieve optimal health benefits, is best to take a variety of different colors as each color contains unique health components.

What is orange?

Orange fruits and vegetables loaded with abundance of goodness are a great way to combat illness and disease. A vital component in them is antioxidant, known to be capable of eliminating free radicals, crucial for the health of the skin, eyesight and heart, and decrease the risk of cancer. The best-known antioxidant in orange foods is beta-carotene which gives their sunny and brilliant color.

Most of the orange foods contain the following nutrients -

Beta-carotene – Studies have found this flavonoid compound protects cells from free radical damage and may help to destroy pre-cancerous cells in the tumors, especially against skin, lung and oral cavity cancers. As a precursor (before conversion by the liver) to vitamin A, both share similar functions such as vision (including macular degeneration), reproduction (sperm production), immunity and age-related conditions.

Vitamin A: This is a powerful natural anti-oxidant and is required by the body for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucus membranes. Vital for night vision, your retina requires vitamin A in order to process visual stimuli. It is recommended that adults consume 700 to 900IU of vitamin A daily. It is often used for the treatment of acne and is vital to dermatological disorder. Do not worry that vitamin A is toxic when consumed in its natural form.

Vitamin B6: This particular vitamin is responsible for the production of hemoglobin - the component of red blood cells which transports oxygen to your lungs and cells. A deficiency can cause skin problems, extreme fatigue and neurological disease. As it helps to reduce the chemical homocysteine in our bodies, it is thus associated with degenerative diseases, including the prevention of heart attacks.

Vitamin C: Most people know that vitamin C is important to help ward off cold and flu viruses, but few people are aware of its important role in bone and tooth formation, digestion and blood cell formation. It helps to accelerate wound healing, produce collagen to maintain skin’s youthful elasticity, cope with stress and protect against cancer.

Vitamin D: It plays a vital role in our energy levels, moods, muscoskeletal development, heart, nerves, skin, teeth and thyroid gland support.
Iron: It plays other important roles in our body, including red and white blood cell production, resistance to stress, proper immune functioning and the metabolizing of protein.

Magnesium: As the relaxation and anti-stress mineral, it is necessary for healthy artery, blood, bone, heart, muscle, and nerve function.

Potassium: This mineral can help your body maintain a proper electrolyte balance and improve cardiac health by regulating blood pressure and keeping your blood osmolarity levels normal. If your potassium or sodium levels get too low, you could sustain a heart attack or stroke. In less severe deficiencies, you could feel sluggish and dizzy.

All the above compounds can be found in orange colored fruits and vegetables such as carrots, tangerines, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, mangoes, persimmons and pumpkins  Some examples are

This tuber is found to contain huge amounts of beta-carotene, magnesium, copper, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin D, potassium and iron. It helps in stomach ulcers and colon inflammation. Its high antioxidant properties combining both beta-carotene and vitamin C help to remove free radicals that cause damage cells, and thus prevent cancer in certain organs and glands.

Darker orange sweet potatoes contain more beta-carotene than yellow varieties. By cooking with its skin on helps to retain the most nutrients.

Orange

Orange contains Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A, potassium and calcium. They are helpful with symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, prevention of kidney stones, high blood pressure, arthritis and diabetes. It can also improve digestion and increases metabolism. However, taking in the morning can cause stomach irritation and gastritis.

One medium orange provides 120% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C. Note its low vitamin A content with no beta-carotene.

If you do not have the time to eat the whole fruit, go for the 100% orange juice which provides a host of nutrients and is free of fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol and added sugars.

Mango

Mango is rich in pre-biotic dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and flavonoid antioxidant compounds. According to new research study, its antioxidants have been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers.

Being high in iron, it helps to fight against anaemia, reduce kidney problems, fever and respiratory problems. Its high Vitamin C content can relieve a runny nose or clogged pores of the skin.

Mango peel is also rich in phytonutrients, such as the pigment antioxidants like carotenoids and polyphenols.

Papaya

The papaya is very low in calories (just 39 calories/100 g), a rich source of phyto-nutrients, minerals and vitamins, and contains no cholesterol.

High digestive enzymes help to break down some of the more difficult foods in our stomach eg. beans, dairy and meat. High in fibre it is a big relief for constipation or an upset stomach.

Taken in juice form, it helps to prevent nausea, including morning and motion sickness. Some studies have shown the juice can slow the proliferation of liver cancer cells, possibly due to lycopene or immune system stimulation.

In traditional medicine, papaya seeds are anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, and analgesic, and are frequently used to treat stomachache, ringworm infections and deadly bacteria like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus or Salmonella typhi.

Unripe green papaya is cooked as a vegetable in many Asian and Pacific regions. However, the fruit should not be eaten raw as it contains toxic alkaloids in its milky latex. This is especially dangerous when taken in high doses by pregnant women.

A fully ripe papaya is full of nutrients, with a half providing 1,047 IU vitamin A, 84mg vitamin C and 234mg potassium. Taken in great amount can cause yellowing of soles and palms, which is otherwise harmless. However, this is no where compared with carrot as its beta carotene level is a mere 6% equivalent.

Carrot

This wholesome food has much health benefiting compounds such as beta-carotenes, vitamin A, minerals and anti-oxidants with negligible amount of fat and no cholesterol.

It is an exceptionally rich source of carotenes and vitamin-A. 100 g fresh carrot contains 8285 µg of beta-carotene and 16706 IU of vitamin A. When lightly cooked, it can release carotenes for better control of insulin levels.

One-half cup of carrots contains only 30 calories and more than 19,000 International Units (IU) of vitamin A. Adults should aim to consume 25,000-83,000 IU of vitamin A daily. Eaten as a healthy snack, it is also a good source of fiber.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is incredibly rich in dietary fibre, minerals, vitamins (eg. vitamin A, C and E) and flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants such as leutin, xanathin and carotenes. 100g fruit provides just 26 calories and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol.

Loaded with Vitamin A and beta-carotene, they are great fighters of cancer, especially lung cancer and reduce the risk of heart disease. With its ability in providing urinary tract support and aid in normal kidney functioning, Type 2 diabetes can benefit much out of it.  A serving of 1 cup of cooking pumpkin provides 2,650IU of Vitamin A and 564mg potassium, as well as selenium, magnesium and folate.

Even pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of dietary fiber, mono-unsaturated fatty acids (good for heart health) and a concentrated sources of protein, minerals and health-benefiting vitamins. For instance, 100g of pumpkin seeds provide 559 calories, 30g of protein, 110% RDA of iron, 4987 mg of niacin (31% RDA), selenium (17% of RDA), zinc (71%) etc. It is also an excellent source of health promoting amino acid tryptophan, useful in treating sleeplessness and epilepsy.

Other comments

Combine orange fruits and vegetables with a few servings of dark green vegetables and you have yourself a winning combination. Lightly cooking orange vegetables actually helps to preserve the nutrients and enable the release of carotenes, which are otherwise trapped. As all carotenes are fat-soluble, absorption is enhanced if these foods are consumed with fats. All in makes a perfect meal!

Cook your tomatoes

Lycopene is a carotenoid (same family as beta-carotene) and phytochemical that gives a reddish hue to food such as tomatoes, red peppers, watermelons and papayas. Our body cannot produce this substance, only plants and microorganisms can synthesize it.

Basically, it is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect our cells from radical damage, causing major illnesses like atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, cancer and macula degeneration.

Health Benefits

+ A study conducted found that men with high levels of lycopene in their fatty tissues had a 55% reduced risk of heart disease. Cardiac patients experience reduction in the incidence of strokes with high intake. It has the ability to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce inflammation.

+ In a 1995 Harvard University study conducted with 47,894 men, it was found that those who ate tomato products more than twice per week had a 21-34% reduced risk of prostate cancer. The risk is further reduced to 45% for those who ate 10 servings or more per week.

+ Women with high levels of lycopene have a 5 times lower rate of cervical cancer than those with the lowest levels.

+ Lycopene has been shown to have a protective effect against stomach, colon, lung and skin cancers. Taking in the morning it aids digestion and improves metabolism. However, taking during dinner can cause stomach swelling.

+ In cosmetic products, Vitamin C is highly recommended for assisting in the repair and protection of the human skin. New study has found that daily intake of lycopene can result in a 30% increase of the ability of their skin to withstand UV radiation damage from sun exposure. As it degrades easily, it is important to keep the container properly sealed between uses.

Source

Lycopene is usually derived from tomatoes and tomato products. As lycopene is enclosed in the tissue and only that portion present is absorbed more can be extracted when pressed into juice, sauce, paste or ketchup. This process breaks down the cell walls of the tomato and releases abundance of lycopene. For example, one ripe tomato contains 4 mg of lycopene whilst a cup of tomato soup has 25 mg equivalent. A disadvantage is that the structure of lycopene is altered by the temperature changes involved in processing.

Oven-roasted potatoes topped with ketchup is great but not the unhealthy french fries. For quenching thirst, reach out for tomato juice for a worthy choice.

Eating tomato products with oil enables the lycopene to be more readily absorbed by the body given its fat-soluble (as are vitamins, A, D, E and beta-carotene) nature. Thus, topping a tomato salad with a little olive oil is a great way to increase its bioavailability.

Though food sources are deemed to be safe, lycopene can also be obtained in supplemental form either as tablets or capsules. Other nutrients may be added to the formula for better antioxidant benefits.

Caution

+ So far, maximum dose limit is not established and there are no reported incidence of toxicity from taking too much lycopene. As a safety guideline, daily intake of around 15 mg in total should be tolerable. Over the limit can cause upset and stomach side effects such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, cramping or pain in conjunction with bowel movement changes. The side effects from an allergic reaction in any quantity can be hives, itching, bad rashes and chest pains.

+ There may be indirect problems caused by excessive consumption of tomatoes or commercially-prepared tomato products. Tomatoes have been strongly linked to certain forms of arthritis, especially rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. For gout patients, their low pH can pose a potential trigger food because as the existing crystals dissolve, a gout attack is triggered. As for processed tomato products, the high sodium content usually poses a problem for high blood pressure.

+ A diet overloads in lycopene may be counterproductive for the health. The immune system can be compromised, disengaging your body to fight infections and be able to repair itself. Illnesses and diseases that include any fevers or inflammation may not be able to fix with too much lycopene consumed daily, in very high doses over extended period.

+ Eating rich, red fruit and vegetables that contain high doses of lycopene can also turn your skin a pasty orange color over time. To cure such side effects, simply reduce or stop your intake of lycopene for time being.

+ Antioxidant supplements like lycopene may interfere with radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Even though studies have not been done in humans, antioxidants are known to clean up free radicals, which could interfere with one of the methods by which chemotherapy and radiation destroy cancer cells.

Our comments

By simply changing to a healthier diet, you are on the road to improving your overall health condition. Forgo your fast food for some fresh watermelon, delicious guava, crunchy carrot sticks and some tomato paste on your favorite biscuit/cracker for snacks. Eating a meal with tomato-based food is enough to gain all the benefits mentioned above.
BONUS!!!
*  Acne?
Tomatoes have a lot of vitamins A and C, antioxidants and acidic content, effectively in treating a host of minor skin ailments, especially oily skin problem. Mash one small tomato into a pulp, then spread the pulp on your face and let it sit for one hour. Wash it off with tepid water and pat dry. Repeat once a day for a week to see result.

*  Cramp legs?

Cramp legs can be due to potassium deficiencies, which occurs when this mineral is flushed out by diuretics, caffeinated beverages or heavy perspiration during exercise. By sipping 10 ounces of potassium-rich tomato juice daily, you are on the road to speedy recovery and lower risk of painful cramp flare-ups in as little as 10 days, say UCLA researchers.

Take more ginger

Ginger tops the list of effective natural home remedies. The potency of ginger has been well-documented for a host of ailments because it is packed with essential nutrients and rejuvenating compounds. It comes fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice or oil.

For more than 2000 years, ginger has been traditionally used in China and India to aid digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea and nausea. It is also recommended for arthritis, colic, colds and heart conditions. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration recognises its safety aspect and allows it to be sold as an unregulated dietary supplement.

When Danish researchers recently asked achy people to jazz up their diets with ginger, it eased muscle and joint pain, swelling and stiffness for up to 63% of them within two months. Experts awarded credit to ginger's potent compounds called gingerols, which prevent the production of pain-triggering hormones. The study-recommended dose: add at least 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of chopped ginger to meals daily.

Health benefits

(1) It may improve gastrointestinal disorders with its antibacterial properties. Other components in it can resolve vomiting and nausea because it controls the peristaltic movement of the muscle.

(2) It has blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties.

(3) Ginger extract can control the quantity of free radicals and the  peroxidation of lipids, thus protecting the body from oxidative damage.

(4) It is anti-inflammatory in nature and can be used in treating pain from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or joint and muscle injury.

(5) Some studies indicate ginger may provide short-term relief of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. Women who suffer menstrual cramping can find relief taking this natural ‘painkiller’.

(6) Ginger can help patients suffering from gallstones, as it promotes the production of bile.

(7) It reduces the symptoms of motion sickness.

(8) Treatment for cancer?

Ginger root supplement has been identified in a study to help reduce colon inflammation markers such as PGE2. A University of Michigan study showed that when ginger was added to ovarian cancer cells in the laboratory, it caused the cancer cells to self-destruct (apoptosis). Hence, the chemopreventive potentials of gingerol present a promising future alternative to expensive and toxic therapeutic agents.

Safety aspects

Though declared safe by US FDA, precautions should be taken under some situations.

(1) Bleeding disorders: Taking ginger might increase your risk of bleeding. Avoid using it when you have this problem.

(2) Diabetes: Ginger may lower your blood sugar. As a result, your diabetes medications might need to be adjusted by your healthcare provider.

(3) Heart conditions: High doses of ginger might worsen some heart conditions. Use sparingly for a start.

(4) Medications that slow blood clotting. Taking ginger along with medications (eg. warfarin, aspirin) that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.

(5) Medications for high blood pressure. Ginger might reduce blood pressure in a way that is similar to some medications for blood pressure and heart disease. Taking ginger along with these medications might cause your blood pressure to drop too low or cause an irregular heartbeat.

(6) Intoxication – An acute overdose of ginger is usually in excess of about 2 grams of ginger per kilogram of body mass, dependent on level of ginger tolerance, and can result in a state of central nervous system over-stimulation.

(7) Allergic reactions to ginger can be a rash or heartburn, bloating, gas, belching and nausea, especially when taken in powdered form.

(8) Unchewed fresh ginger may result in intestinal blockage, and individuals who have had ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or blocked intestines may react badly when large quantities are consumed.

(9) Do not give ginger to children under 2. Above 2 can take to treat nausea, stomach cramping and headaches.

People have been reaping the many health benefits of ginger for ages. It is time that you see it more than just an ingredient in your dishes, but also as a powerful natural remedy available in your garden or kitchen.

The COOL cucumber

In the ancient times, cucumbers had been used by European trappers and traders as quick meals to thwart off starvation.  These days we are more familiar with cucumbers as salads. Let us examine how this humble food can be highly beneficial for a wide variety of household and health related issues as well.

CUCUMBER SLICE

Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of most B Vitamins and carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up to last you for hours.  It also supplies your daily need of Vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Health benefits

+  Eating cucumbers may decrease the appearance of blemishes such as pimples and blackheads, making it an effective and an often-referred remedy for acne.  Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals are delivered to the skin to cause the collagen to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too.

+  Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache.

Other uses

+  Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. Even ants hate cucumbers. Keep the skin of cucumbers near the place or ant hole.

+  Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?  Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror to provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance with fog eliminated.

+   Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you do not have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe to see a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

+  Need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and the job is done.

+  Stressed out and cannot find time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?  Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, to release the chemicals and nutrients in it. The outgoing steam creates a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

+  Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, to remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, without leaving streaks and harm to your fingers or fingernails during the cleaning process.

+  Using a pen and made a mistake?  Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls.

CUCUMBER JUICE

However, it is essential to understand the full potential of the cucumber by examining the benefits of drinking cucumber juice to combat everything from high blood pressure and constipation to cancer.

+  Along with healthier skin, cucumbers contain 90% water making it ideal for a variety of common issues. For those wishing to decrease their blood pressure, drinking this fruit in the form of juice, may provide a noticeable amount of relief as the blood pressure slowly declines. The high water content enables one to stay hydrated and helps to flush out toxins.

+  Anyone dealing with the pains of constipation benefits from this fruit due to its high levels of alkalinity and increased amounts of water. The insoluble fiber on its skin allow food to move through the digestive tract quickly. Its enzyme also helps to beak down protein. Take 2 cucumbers per day for adequate bulk to aid bowel action.

+  In terms of dieting and diabetes, cucumbers are ideal for an afternoon snack to rebuke hunger for those wishing to lose weight. A bowl of cucumbers contains only 16 calories but slows the digestion process with insoluble fiber.

+  Taken in doses of 4-6 ounces every 2 hours, can treat stomach disorders like heartburn, hyperacidity, gastric and duodenal ulcers.

+  Diabetic patients have no worries about taking this food as its glycemic index is zero meaning it does not contribute to rise in the glucose level.  The fiber content helps to lower sugar level in the blood.

+  Cucumber seeds are rich in potassium. Emulsion of the shelled seeds has been found highly beneficial in the treatment of burning sensation in urinary calculi or stone in persons who are predisposed to such disorders. Emulsion of the shelled seeds, mixed with curd, is useful in dissolving the gravel in urinary tract and in reducing hyperacidity of the urine.

+  The high content of sulfur and silicone in cucumber juice may aid those wishing to increase the growth of hair and healthier nails. Also contain silica, which is ideal for healthier ligaments, tendons and muscles, making it perfect for people seeking relief of rheumatoid problems such as arthritis.

+  The alkaline-forming minerals in the cucumber represent 64% and the acid-forming minerals 36%. This mineral arrangement invests the cucumber with definite remedial and curative properties. It makes it useful in maintaining the alkalinity of the blood and considered one of the best natural diuretics, secreting and promoting the flow of urine. Its high alkalinity makes it difficult for cancer cells to survive.  Hence, it may prove beneficial in avoiding cancer of all types.

+  A glassful of fresh juice mixed with tender coconut water, given one or two ounces every hour, is a medicine for excessive thirst during cholera. It acts excellently by restoring the electrolyte liquid balance in dehydration.

How to prepare cucumber juice,

Simply running a freshly washed cucumber through a juicer.  You may like to combine with other juices such as carrot juice. Try adding sugar and honey to enhance the taste.  Ginger can be mixed for a spark of flavor.

Regardless of which cucumber juice mix you use, drinking and eating these healthy cucumbers can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, proving to be highly beneficial for all.

Superfood – PURPLE sweet potato

Amazing. A “super-food” that is cheap and taste great. The latest in a long line of potentials to feed the world’s growing population……

The purple sweet potato's coloring is responsible for the chemical anthocyanin.  This substance produces red, blue or purple colors in different types of fruits and vegetables, like blueberries, red grapes and red cabbage.  However, the specially grown purple sweet potato has a higher concentration of the chemical than any other species of potato. Scientists have identified two stands of anthocyanin that can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, especially useful for treating colon cancer.

Contents

Sweet potato far exceeds the nutrition and health values of rice. The nutritional values of a 3 oz. baked sweet potato are: calories 90, fat 0 g, saturated fat 0 g, cholesterol 0 mg, carbohydrate 21 g, protein 2 g, dietary fiber 3 g, sodium 36 mg.

Benefits

Some benefits are as follows:

1. Sweet potato is more filling and suppresses hunger pangs longer. This is ideal for those on weight management program to consider replacing fatty foods in their diets for this complex carbohydrate food.

2. Unlike rice, it is easy to grow like in backyards with or without fertilizers.

3. Unlike rice which needs to be eaten with a dish, sweet potato tastes good and can be eaten by itself. Thus, substituting rice with sweet potato saves money for other needs.

4. Rice cannot match the nutritional values of potato. As rice converts to sugar in the body, most Asian societies are plagued with diabetics. The poor have to make good with rice and less on the dish which are more expensive. That makes them vulnerable to diabetes, an ailment known in developed countries as a rich man’s disease.

On the other hand, sweet potato is not that sweet after all. Diabetics can eat without fearing of rising sugar level, given its low glycemic index. (This index measures the rate the body converts carbohydrates into sugar. The lower the index in a food, the slower it is being digested and thus allows a slower release of blood sugar.)

5. It can help patients who are suffering from hypertension, high cholesterol or blood sugar problem to improve their health conditions given the zero fat, saturated fat and cholesterol content. High fiber aids to reduce blood cholesterol and relieve constipation.

Our comments

+ This once upon a time known as ‘poor man’s’ food has joined the league of ‘super-food’. Our primitive ancestors survived well on its health-promoting benefits. Even during the World War I and II, Asians had little to eat and had to be contented with eating sweet potatoes to fill their stomach.

+ Whilst eating, keep the skin on as it contains more fibre than oatmeal. If you do not feel safe eating inorganic sweet potatoes and want to remove the skin, a fast way is to soak in cold water immediately after boiling. This process can also rid some of the starch content.

+ If you picked on the orange color sweet potato, the nutritional value is not much lesser. It has almost twice the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A and four times the recommended allowance for beta carotene, both being potent antioxidant.

So much recent research have discovered its immense abilities in anti-inflammation, improves blood circulation, prevents free radicals from damaging connective tissues and cancer prevention. Include in your diet as much as possible.

Micronutrients -
  • The leaves contain many B vitamins which act as co-enzymes essential during carbohydrates, fat and protein metabolism.
  • The root contains calcium, B-complex vitamins and iron, which nourish the glands that help regulate the uptake of calcium.
  • Like most herbal plants, it is very rich in phytochemicals and antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin-A, beta-carotene, vitamin-C, vitamin-E, folates, zea-xanthin, lutein and cryptoxanthins. Not to miss is high vitamin Kfor preventing inflammatory disorders and promoting bone health (eg. osteoarthritis) and treating Alzheimer’s by limiting neuronal damage in the brain and protecting the myelin sheath around the nerves.
Based on 100 mg with only 36 calories/100g, a comparison of the nutritional values to RDA:-

38% of folates, 220% of vitamin C, 281% of vitamin A, 1366% of vitamin K, 14% of calcium, 77.5% of iron and 5561 mcg of zeaxanthin, 5054 mcg of beta-carotene.

Bulk minerals include potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, calcium and potassium.

Medicinal benefits

+  Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure by countering the effects of sodium.  For this reason, parsley has been traditionally used for congestion and inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, kidney stones and urine retention problems. This seems to be the cheapest, simplest and natural way of cleaning up the kidneys.

+  It works on the gall bladder and can remove gallstones if used properly by taking a pint of the tea daily.

+  Its antiseptic and carminative properties are excellent for the detoxifying organs – liver and spleen.

+  It has therapeutic effect on the optic nerves with large amounts of Vitamin A, beta-carotene, zea-xanthin and lutein.

+  Studies show that myristicin, an organic compound found in the essential oil of parsley, not only inhibits tumour formation (especially in the lungs, colon and prostate), but also activates the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase to attach to and fight against, oxidized molecules or carcinogens.

+  Homocysteine, a self-produced amino acid threatens the body’s blood vessels when its levels become too high.  The folate (or vitamin B9) found in parsley helps convert homocysteine into harmless molecules.  Hence, a regular garnish of parsley can help ward off cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke and atherosclerosis.

+  Many people use parsley root tea to make stiff and unmanageable fingers work again. Pour a quart of boiling water over a cup of firmly packed fresh parsley and steep for 15 minutes.  Strain and then refrigerate. Parsley root and seeds contain ingredients that help produce a pain relieving benefit to relax stiff joints.

Safety profile

  • Parsley should not be consumed as a drug or supplement by pregnant women. Parsley as an oil, root, leaf or seed could lead to uterine stimulation and pre-term labour.
  • This herbal plant is very high in oxalic acid, 1.70 mg per 100 g. Prolonged consumption of foods high in oxalic acid results in gouty arthritis, kidney stones and mineral-nutrient deficiencies.
  • Raw parsley juice is a most potent juice and should never be taken alone in quantities of more than one or two ounces at a time unless it is mixed into a sufficient quantity of carrot or other juices.

Just garnish a handful of fresh parsley to almost any dish you are cooking as it goes well with any savoury foods.  Plus, it naturally freshens your breadth.

Weight buster - Raspberry Ketones

Dr. Oz probably has popularised the weight loss benefits of raspberry ketones in his Health Show broadcasted on American TV that this new dietary ”miracle weight loss supplement” is believed to be the latest answer to the battle of the bulge.

This tiny berry’s goodness has been revered by indigenous people around the world for centuries, believed to possess powerful healing and health properties.

Nutritional Profile

This compound called raspberry ketone is an enzyme occurring in a variety of fruits including raspberry, cranberry and blackberry although most abundant in the raspberry and is responsible for the sweet aroma.

Raspberry has an outstanding source of phytonutrients, and provides us with dozens of anthocyanins, flavonoids, stilbenoids, phenolic acids, tannins, lignans and ellagitannins (like ellagic acid), cyanidins and pelargonidins. Besides being an excellent source of digestive health-promoting fiber, other nutrients include Vitamin C, E, K , folate, magnesium, manganese, omega-3 fatty acids, copper, iron and potassium can be found in the humble berry.

How it helps in obesity?

The rheosmin found in raspberries can increase metabolism in our fat cells by increasing enzyme activity, oxygen consumption and heat production in certain types of fat cells. It can also decrease activity of a fat-digesting enzyme released by our pancreas called pancreatic lipase.

By boosting fat metabolism this way, less fat is likely to be deposited in our fat cells, and can even use up some of the fat that is stored there. In addition, the number of pro-inflammatory messaging molecules that are produced by our fat cells is reduced, helping our body to burn fat faster and thus reduces obesity as well as risk of fatty liver.

In obese persons with type 2 diabetes, adiponectin is not produced in sufficient amounts or, if adequately produced, remains too inactive. This becomes a key problem for regulation of their blood sugar and blood fats. By activating adiponectin, the tiliroside in raspberries can help improve insulin balance, blood sugar balance and blood fat balance in them. Studies showed that it helps to prevent unwanted consequences of excess body fat and compromised regulation of blood sugar, blood insulin and blood fats.

Researchers found that raspberry extracts can block activity of an enzyme called alpha-glucosidase which is a starch-digesting enzyme responsible for the breakdown of starches into sugars in the digestive tract. This enzyme is usually activated and can cause excessively high levels of blood sugar following a meal. Hence, this blocking activity may make it possible for persons with type 2 diabetes or obese persons experiencing problems with blood sugar regulation to better manage their blood sugar levels.

Clinical Studies

+ Several recent studies from Japan showed that raspberry ketones are chemically similar to capsaicin, the heat compound from chili peppers which significantly increases fat burning, especially for fatty liver.

+ In 2010, Korean researchers reported that raspberry ketone increased fat cells’ secretion of a hormone called adiponectin that regulates the processing of sugars and fats in the blood. The reported benefits are impressive: increased total weight loss, including a significant reduction of abdominal fat — with zero side effects. Studies show that thin people have higher levels of adiponectin than overweight individuals.

+ A 2012 study from China found that raspberry ketones had several health benefits — including improved cholesterol levels, insulin sensitivity and reduced fat in the liver.

+ As for Cancer -

The benefits of raspberries for anti-cancer prevention have long been attributed to their rich antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. In animal studies involving breast, cervical, colon, esophageal and prostate cancers, raspberry phytonutrients have been shown to play an important role in lowering oxidative stress, reducing inflammation and thereby altering the development or reproduction of cancer cells.

More good news from new research conducted that showed that the anti-cancer benefits of raspberries may extend beyond their basic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory aspects. Phytonutrients in the berries may also be able to change the signals that are sent to potential or existing cancer cells.

For existing cancer cells, phytonutrients like ellagitannins may be able to decrease cancer cell numbers by sending signals that encourage the cancer cells to commit apoptosis (programmed cell death). This signaling is likely to involve activity of the p53 protein that is typically classified as a tumor suppressor protein. This action is similarly extended to potentially but not yet cancerous cells to remain non-cancerous.

Forms

+ A cup of fresh raspberries for an adult provides about 15 grams of total carbohydrates and only 5-6 grams of sugar. In fact, half cup serving is likely to be a very good fit in most diets, even diets focused on stabilization of blood sugar.

+ The recommended dose for supplement is 100mg per day or the same benefit as consuming 90 pounds of raspberries.
+ As for Raspberry Ketone products, can contain a few standard ingredients to enhance effectiveness:

- African mango extract is known to help promote healthy and rapid weight loss by targeting central abdominal belly fat.

- Resveratrol and Acai berry are very rich in antioxidants too.

- Apple cider vinegar is often used to help speed up the metabolism and promote healthy weight loss.

- Caffeine and grapefruit juice may be added for some products and cardiac patients have to be careful.

+ Raspberries in processed forms include drying, juicing, fermenting into wine, straining or filtering.

However, if the seeds of the raspberries are removed during processing, many key phytonutrients may be lost or greatly reduced. Exposures to heat during processing may also result in substantial phytonutrient loss.

Health concern

+ With the way the media glamorizes extreme thinness, people with a very low or normal BMI (body mass index) and already-high adiponectin levels who are over-conscious of image may use it without restrictions. This can lead to an unhealthy degree of leanness and body-image issue.

+ It is not suitable for pregnant/lactating women, children and patients on medications. Ironically, raspberry leaf has a long history of use in botanical medicine for pregnancy and childbirth and is widely available in the U.S. and other countries in tea form for other health purposes.

+ The Japanese study states that the chemical structure of raspberry ketones is similar to synephrine, a stimulant. For this reason people with cardiac issues or high blood pressure should avoid it.

+ Raspberries are among a small number of foods that contain measurable amounts of oxalates, naturally-occurring substances found in plants, animals and human beings. When oxalates become too concentrated in body fluids, they can crystallize and cause health problems. For this reason, individuals with already existing and untreated kidney, liver or gallbladder problems may want to avoid eating raspberries.

Other comments

+ Recent research on full ripe organic raspberries found significantly higher total antioxidant capacity than non-organic raspberries. However, note that raspberries ripened after harvest are highly perishable and can mold quite easily at room temperature. The best way is to keep them refrigerated at all times at temperatures between 35-39°F (2°-4°C), and consume all within 1 to 2 days after purchase.

+ Research has shown that raspberry ketone can help in your weight-loss efforts, especially when paired with regular exercise and a well-balanced diet of healthy and whole foods.

All in all, raspberry ketones is a powerful enzyme that tells your body to automatically burn fat within the cells as energy at an accelerated pace and curb appetite to achieve better result.

Perfect fruit - Avocado

Originating from Mexico around 10000 BC avocado is a member of the berry family. This wild variety is small, dark blacked skin and contains a large seed.

Many people like the taste of this fruit but avoid overeating due to the wrong nutritional information provided in the press and the public.

Let us take a medium-sized avocado to examine its contents:

It is a “complete food” with 4 grams of protein (more than milk) containing all 9 essential amino acids.  This is great news for those who are moving away from meats and toward more vegetarian dishes.

- 322 calories provided seems high but most of which is health-promoting fats called monounsaturated fat accounting for about three-quarters of the total calories.

- Out of 13.5 gms of fiber – 75% insoluble and 25% soluble fiber provide a good mix for chronic disease prevention and digestive disorders.

- MINERALS

Main - Potassium – 975 mg (60% more than banana), Phosphorus – 105 mg, Magnesium – 58 mg
Others - calcium, sodium, iron, selenium, manganese, copper, zinc.

- VITAMINS

Main - Vitamin A – 293 IU, Vitamin C – 20 mg
Others - Vitamin B5, E and K.

Health benefits

+ It protects blood serum cholesterol and reduces the risk of related cardiovascular diseases. This was after a study done that found out a 40% reduction in stroke risk was associated with an average daily increase in potassium consumption of about 400 mg, the amount supplied by less than half an avocado. Other related problems like blood pressure and stroke are linked to the same matter on potassium-sodium imbalance (more sodium excess). Use of diuretics can also lead to potassium deficiency and any critical shortage can put a strain on the heart.

+ Avocado may help not only lower bad cholesterol, but also increase levels of good cholesterol. Its monounsaturated fat content is associated with lower blood cholesterol and lower blood pressure as well. Other components, the folate and vitamin E have similar protective effect on the heart.

+  Avocados contain a significant amount of folic acid, which is essential to preventing birth defects like spina bifida and neural tube defects.

+ Contrary to popular assumptions, the avocado can form part of the diet of a successful weight-management program. Its monounsaturated fat speeds up the basal metabolic rate, as compared with saturated fat. Eating is curbed naturally by its high fat content. As mentioned above it is a complete food enriched with vitamins and minerals even for those who choose to skip a proper meal. However, note that consuming too many avocados may lead to weight gain because of the fat content, even though it is an unsaturated fat.

+ Avocado is used extensively in skincare products such as skin moisturizer, cleansing cream, makeup base, sunscreen, lipstick, bath oil and hair conditioner. It can be used in the treatment of skin disorders too. Its high water content of 70% – 80% of water provides much moisture and prevents dehydration.

+  Fresh avocados contain lycopene and beta-carotene, which are important carotenoid antioxidants which help reduce cell damage. The highest concentration of these antioxidants is located in the dark green flesh closest to the peel. Together with two mineral constituents of antioxidant enzymes, namely copper and iron, they can eliminate free radicals to protect against cancer, heart disease, arthritis, cataracts, and may delay the aging process. It is used both in prevention and treatment of prostate and breast cancers, and poses a great effect on the living tissues, especially those in the heart muscle.

+  Avocados are an excellent source of the carotenoid lutein, which reduces the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Other considerations

+  Avocado's high levels of monounsaturated fats can act on insulin resistance and thus help to regulate blood sugar levels. Its soluble fiber can also assist to keep blood sugar levels at bay. However, diabetic patients should be beware because it contains an odd sugar type that
depresses insulin production. On top of that, its high potassium and low sodium content pose a burden to the kidneys in disposal, especially for renal failure patients. Hence, such patients probably should consume it cautiously.

+ The biggest winning benefit of avocado is that by combining with other fat burning foods, it improves the overall nutrient absorption by an astounding 400%. The reason being the mono-saturated fat in an avocado helps the body absorb fat-soluble carotenoid phytonutrients better.

Beware of some POISONOUS plants

Some plants are cherished by those who prefer easy maintenance and no hassle in keeping them alive. However, note these nice plants can be a big nuisance and dangerous at times.

As plants cannot run, fight or hide, so they have to make themselves inedible with poisons, or get completely eaten up and become extinct. Animals that live on plants have some degree of resistance to plant poisons, but humans mostly lack such resistance. Salad plants have been selected and grown for their lack of poisons but such plants cannot survive on their own without human protection.

The Christ’s Thorn

Poisonous parts: Sap

This plant makes one believes it is the ‘crown’ Jesus wore while he carried his torture stake to his crucifixion. A native to Madagascar, this plant
is a trailing or climbing spiny shrub with showy flower clusters and red, petal like bracts.

The caustic and irritant chemicals in the latex is an irritant to the skin and eyes causing abdominal pains, blistering/irritation of the mouth/throat and vomiting.

English Ivy

Poisonous parts: Leaves
This harmless looking vine grown easily both indoor and outdoor is known to cause poisoning in cattle, dogs, sheep and humans.
Symptoms of ingestion are difficulty in breathing, convulsions, vomiting, paralysis and coma. Dermatitis is rare but can be severe with weeping blisters which responds slowly to treatment. Luckily the berries are so bitter that children do not like the taste.

Hydrangea

Poisonous parts: Leaves and buds

The striking color of the lovely flowers depends on the pH of the soil-acidic soils. Low acidity produces blue flowers, pale cream flowers from neutral soil, and alkaline soils results in pink or purple.

Poison from the flower buds can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pains, diarrhoea, labored breathing, lethargy and coma. Sensitive individuals may develop contact dermatitis from handling the plants.

Dumbcane or Leopard Lily

Poisonous parts: All parts
Poisonous component: Calcium oxalate

This is both a popular indoor and outdoor plant found in homes, gardens, parks and offices.  Painful and immediate swelling of the mouth and throat occurs after chewing on leaves of dumbcane. Speech impediment does occur and can last several days. Avoid eye contact with the juices which can result in intense pain and swelling, and in worst cases cause partial or permanent blindness. This plant emits a deadly poison, so fatal that it can kill a child in less than a minute and an adult in 15 minutes.

Other than serving the purpose of air purifier it has no known benefit and should be removed to avoid trouble.

Swiss-cheese plant

Poisonous part: Leaves, fruits
Poisonous component: Calcium oxalate

The leaves can pose danger to humans or family pets. Experimental rats and mice died after they were fed plant extracts.  General symptoms of poisoning are immediate and painful with loss of voice, blistering, hoarseness, irritation of the mouth. Its adaptability to wide range of conditions encountered in the home and office makes it a popular indoor plant. In fact, it thrives well under high humidity, shade and a temperature above 20C/72F, especially to blosoom. However, the immature fruit is very high in oxalic acid and takes a year to ripe.  Though it tastes great like pineapple in flavor and texture, the toxicity is too much to bear.  For sensitive individual it can cause allergic disorder characterized by raised watery swelling patches of skin, accompanied by intense itching.

Heart leaf philodendron

Poisonous parts: Leaves, juices
Poisonous component: Calcium oxalate

Philodendrons are potted plants that can cause poisoning in humans and pets because of its oxalates. General symptoms of contact dermatitis with the plant juices are reddening, itchiness and inflammation of the skin. Ingestion will quickly cause painful burning and swelling of lips, mouth, tongue, and throat.

Other than easy upkeep and doubling up as air purifier, it should not be left at home.

ZZ plant’ Zamiocalcus zamiifolia

Poisonous part: all

In recent times, many people like to have "money trees" in their homes for environment green and draws in good luck. Unfortunately this ornamental plant is capable of releasing a toxic gas deemed to harm the human body. If you have planted it at home shift it near the windows or out of the house to prevent the poisonous vapour from harming the health of the family.

It has been observed that beasts are scared of getting close to the plant and no other plants can survive next to it. Hence, the poisoned soil on which the money tree grows could put human’s life at risk if we have eaten other plants growing on it subsequently. Is possible to get skin allergy and swollen face as well as gum in contact with its sap.

Conclusion

Fatal poisoning by accidental consumption of poisonous plants is almost impossible because poisonous plants are so unpleasant to eat and the human mouth is so sensitive to unpalatable substances. All the worry about poisonous plants is unwarranted.

Summary

In general, a small dose of calcium oxalate is enough to cause intense sensations of burning in the mouth and throat, swelling and choking that could last for up to two weeks.  In greater doses it can cause severe digestive upset, breathing difficulties, coma or even death.  Recovery from severe oxalate poisoning is possible, but can cause permanent liver and kidney damage.

Calcium oxalate is a chemical compound in some plants where it is synthesized via the incomplete oxidation of carbohydrates by forming needle-shaped crystals known as raphides in the plant cells. When these cells are broken in the mouth, the crystals embed themselves in skin of the mouth and throat and cause swelling.

Note that vegetables also contain this element and can become a major constituent of human kidney stones if taken excessively. Plants that contain oxalate include star fruit, black pepper, parsley, spinach, beets, cocoa, chocolate, most nuts, most berries, spinach and beans.  Leaves of the tea plant also contain among the greatest measured concentrations of oxalic acid relative to other plants. However the infusion beverage typically contains only low to moderate amounts of oxalic acid per serving, due to the small quantity of leaves used for brewing.

The insoluble calcium oxalate crystals are usually found in plant stems, roots and leaves.  Ingested into the body, it combines with divalent metallic cations such as calcium and iron to form minute crystals which are then excreted in urine. However, these oxalates can form larger kidney stones that can obstruct the kidney tubules which account for 80% of kidney stones formed from calcium oxalate.  As such, patients with kidney disorders, gout and rheumatoid arthritis are thus advised to avoid foods high in oxalic acid.

Recent research done showed that taking right calcium-rich foods or calcium supplements extracted from fruits and greens rich in cacium gluconate and citrate can prevent calcium stone formation.  Studies done on rats showed that calcium supplements given along with foods high in oxalic acid can cause calcium oxalate to precipitate out in the gut and reduce the levels of oxalate absorbed by the body (by as much as 97% in some cases).

A calcium with magnesium supplement is better because Magnesium oxalate is 567 times more soluble than calcium oxalate and a million times more soluble than mercury oxalate.  It aids the absorption of calcium and acts with calcium, Vitamin D and phosphorus to provide a stronger muscoskeletal system.
