Face saving (I)

Understanding your skin

The skin is the largest and heaviest organ in the human anatomy. It acts as a first line of defence to our internal tissues against the onslaught of external harmful elements such as pathogens, ultra-violet rays and hazardous substances. It also fulfills functions like maintaining and regulating body temperature, to prevent dehydration.

The skin is composed of two main layers: the outer epidermis which acts as the protective barrier. Langerhans' cells lining up here belong to the body's immune system that can detect foreign invasion and activate the white blood cells to launch an attack.

In so doing, it has to replace the top layer every 28 days or more. This process involves moving up new cells known as keratinocytes from the bottom layer of the epidermis. Most cells are dead when brought up to the surface because they do not receive oxygen and nutrients anymore. Keratin produced and oil from the sebaceous glands help to keep the skin moist and waterproof, vital in keeping away bad bacteria from thriving on the surface. In the event this barrier is being stripped off (eg frequent use of hard soap), the skin loses moisture at a rapid rate, leading to the production of more sebum (oil) to "compensate," as well as more bacteria to feed on the dead skin cells and sebum. As a result, skin becomes more sensitive, dry, oily, dull and potentially broken out - all pointing towards signs of malnourished skin. Prolonged loss of nutrients hastens the process of aging.

How skin works?

Cell division can be accelerated if there is a cut or injury. Usually blood clot is formed and when combined with other fibres becomes a scab. Overgrowth of tissue is possible after the recovery. Severely damaged skin may heal by forming scar tissue which may be discolored and de-pigmented. This control mechanism can also fail and moves at an abnormally high rate, giving rise to tumors as in skin cancer.

Also here you can find melanoctyes that give the skin its distinctive color. The chemical substance, melanin produced is the same amongst light and dark skinned people. Only difference is that light skinned people need sun exposure for melanin to be manifested.

The dermis layer is responsible for providing support and food material (eg. oxygen, nutrients) to the epidermis through the blood vessels running its course. In addition, it contains the sebaceous glands, sweat glands, hair follicles and sense receptors.

This layer is held together by a fibrous mesh of collagen and elastin.

Collagen is actually a group of proteins found naturally in the body, mostly in our connective or “fibrous” tissues. In fact, it is the most abundant protein we have, accounting for about 30% of the protein content of the human body. Built thick and interwoven, it keeps the skin strong and stretchable without tearing.

Elastin is also a protein found in connective tissues with the actual property of being elastic. Being thin, they behave like rubber, allowing the skin to snap back and return to its original form.

Teenagers with much collagen and elastin under the skin have tight, smooth and unwrinkled skin.

Below the dermis lies a layer of fat that helps insulate the body from heat and cold, provides protective padding and serves as an energy storage area. The fat is contained in living cells, called fat cells, held together by fibrous tissue. This layer varies in thickness, from a fraction of an inch on the eyelids to several inches on the abdomen and buttocks in some people.

With aging, the skin undergoes changes, both intrinsic and extrinsic. The intrinsic changes are inevitable, reducing the structural integrity of the skin. Visible signs are a loss of firmness and smoothness, emergence of dark spots and discolorations, and the formation of lines and wrinkles.

The deterioration can be explained further:

-   Collagen production naturally declines with age - lowering metabolism which causes cells to produce less of the essential proteins, and thus slow production of new skin cells, allowing the older ones to be around longer which contributes to the dull complexion. The melanocytes cells decrease in number but increase in size which gives a pale look on the skin.

-  Collagen becomes more cross-linked and rigid, like a brick wall that is gradually marked and broken. This results in a weaker framework for skin, so it caves and bends, forming wrinkles. Wounds heal more slowly and the skin thins, becoming even more vulnerable to environmental stressors.

-  The blood vessels in the dermis begin to lose strength and skin becomes vulnerable to injury, leading to bruising and bleeding beneath.

-  Elastin fibers lose their resilience, and the skin does not snap back as well, resulting in the sagging around the eyes, jaw line and neck.

-  The underlying fat in the subcutaneous layer is lost, hollowness appears on the cheek and eye sockets.

-  Both sweat glands and sebaceous glands become less active resulting in dry skin and less heat sensitive.

-  Skin dehydration with lesser water intake. As water makes up 70% of the composition, drinking adequately is crucial for healthy, youth-looking skin.

Extrinsic changes are those that occur due to environmental causes. Free radicals from external sources disturb the body processes, causing premature cell death or alterations in the ability of cells to produce needed components for healthy looking skin. Natural process is not controllable whilst environmental factors including sun exposure, pollution, stress, smoke and oxygen can be minimised by taking necessary precaution.

Free radicals triggered by environmental agents are highly reactive molecules that attack cells and damage collagen and elastin, the vital components in the dermis layer. The oxidation process involves attacking another molecule and stealing an electron from it, setting off a chain reaction of cellular damage. On the contrary, an antioxidant is a molecule that helps neutralise free radicals by donating its electron, thus protecting the skin by helping to block damaging reactions.

The skin's natural defenses against these free radicals are ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E). They are potent antioxidants that intercept the free radicals before damage sets in. However, during time of severe distress, the body does not consider preventing wrinkles a primary concern. Hence, these essential vitamins should be incorporated into your daily care regimen or oral use in combination with your sunscreens.

Sunlight damage

Acceptable levels of sun exposure induces Vitamin D production in the skin which can help to reduce cholesterol.

However, nothing ages the skin faster than over-exposure to damaging sunlight. The effects of ultraviolet radiation on skin cells can be as little as a slight glow or redness on the skin, to extreme sunburn with pain, blistering and peeling on the surface of the skin. Younger complexions may appear to heal from this without apparent residual effects. However, the more severe, deeper damage may not become noticeable until years later, when skin begins to appear leathery dry, wrinkled and pigmented.

There are two types of skin damaging UV rays: UVA and UVB.

+ UVB radiation is the stronger of the two and is the culprit responsible for the typical sunburn as it stimulates the synthesis of melatonin that turns your skin dark usually after 4-8 hours of exposure. Over-stimulation can cause a significant pigmentation of the skin. Vitamin E proves to be better at boosting UVB protection. On the other hand, people with naturally dark skin tone have more melanin that serves as natural sun protection being able to absorb UV-B radiation from the sun. However, a big disadvantage is this process reduces the skin's capacity to produce vitamin D3 by 95%-99% and may require at least three to five times longer exposures to make the same amount of vitamin D as a person with a white skin tone.

Sunscreen containing chemicals such as avobenzone and oxymethylcinnemate are commonly used for the purpose of absorbing UV radiation and thus reduces the amount that reaches the skin. Look out for SPF (sun protection factor) as a measure of protection. One with minimum SPF-30 should be able to block 97% of the sun's rays. People with fairer skin can opt for a higher SPF. Note that for any sunscreen products beyond SPF-30, the incremental benefit tapers off exponentially and there may be potential downsides using such high SPF products. Again Vitamin D can be lacking and needs to be supplemented.

+ UVA rays are not strong and do not cause sunburn or skin reddening. In fact, up to 95% of the sun's radiation that reaches the skin is UVA.  The deep penetration into the dermis layer damages the connective tissue giving rise to thickened skin and wrinkles over a period of time. This happens because it induces the formation of free radicals that in turn, attack the lipids in the skin. In the worst case, skin cancer develops.

Vitamin C demonstrates stronger protective effects against UVA radiation. Having said that, it is not commonly found in cosmetic products due to poor stability and fast decomposition.

A sunblock often comes with much thicker formulation than sunscreen and usually contains inorganic ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which can effectively block the sun's rays from deep skin penetration.  Be aware that even by staying indoor or on a cloudy day, up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can still reach the skin. Window glass blocks UVB rays but not UVA rays.

More comments

Collagen synthesis begins to decline around the age of 40, with a dramatic reduction in synthesis in women after menopause. By the age of 60 there is typically a considerable decline in collagen production.

Do not stop at our face. Our neck has fewer sebaceous glands and thus makes lesser natural oil. Coupled with thin skin layer, it becomes rough with the aging process and may develop wrinkles or visible spots. Act on nourishing and moisturizing our neck today!

Conclusion
The loss of nutrients in the skin is an early sign of aging. Viva Life Science has 3 excellent products that work very well for those who treasure their skin:

Face saving (II)

In the modern society, looking and feeling good become a priority that affect one’s self-worth and confidence. To capture the image of vibrant and radiant health, billions of dollars are poured into research to develop skincare and cosmetics with the objective of transforming beauty into every single individual with imperfections (any perfect one around?). To-date, expectations are still running high but the satisfaction levels remain low.

Why?

Majority of the manufacturers are focused on churning out inexpensive and chemically-based synthetics to maximise profits. The general public had to be contented with two choices for looking youthful – cosmetic make-up or surgery.

New invention

A new revolutionary process, coined COSMOCEUTICALS (cosmetics of pharmaceutical standard) emerges based on the technology of CHIRALITY, founded on established pharmaceutical science, which was discovered over 150 years ago by Lord Kevin, Professor of Natural Philosophy in the University of Glasgow, but never fully realised in cosmetics or skincare use. However, this term is loosely defined as hybrid products, derived from cosmetics and drugs to treat or prevent skin disease.

Toujour La Vie Experience

Introduce the Toujour La Vie (TLV) series of anti-aging cosmoceuticals which promotes healthy, vibrant and youthful-looking skin, focused on natural, plant-based ingredients and concentrated formulas as it makes a successful debut into the beauty industry.

As in the VIVA line of NUTRACEUTICALS (nutrients of pharmaceutical standard) supplements, science plays an integral role in the formulation of this upscale daily facial treatment system which may be your answer to skincare maintenance, enhancement and treatment purpose.

* What Science involved?

The system sets it apart from popular department store lines, salon formulations and other high-end markets. Whilst typical skincare systems are studied to the cellular level, it focuses deeper to the molecular level. Imagine about 10000 human cells covering the head of a pin and each cell is composed of trillion of molecules.

Molecules that make up living systems such as human beings are chiral. Chirality is the orientation or spin direction of a molecule that enables it to fit into a living cell receptor. TLV formulas are chirally correct, meaning that they contain molecules that spin in the appropriate direction.

To allow the ingredients involved to sink in the targeted skin’s receptor properly, they have to be purified to remove ineffective or harmful molecules. This rapid response enables visible results to be achieved safely and effectively. In fact, a non-chirally balanced formula may not perform as well, and likely to have a neutral or even negative effect on the skin.

* Ingredients

Every detail is observed in the Toujours system for maximum benefits. For example, each ingredient has been carefully selected from a natural source. There are no petrochemical preservatives (petroleum), synthetics or other toxic offenders in any of the products. The naturally aroma-therapeutic benefits are produced by essential oils instead of artificial fragrances or colors. As the ingredients are so highly concentrated, a tiny amount of each item is sufficient to provide ample coverage and the rejuvenating vitality of a youthful appearance.

* Versatility

Given the products’ potencies with their finest ingredients in concentrated formulas and an effective delivery system (chiral technology), the entire range of selection benefit all skin types including normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin (see below). Routines can be varied and adjusted to suit various individual needs, climates and seasons. Men would find this series most useful as they are inclined to purchase few anti-aging skincare products usually associated with makeup and cosmetics.

* Products

The vigorous anti-aging formulation comprises 5 items. Normal usage as follows:-

As the jewel of the Toujours line, this moisturizing complex is the most luscious natural skin repair and rejuvenation formula you can find. While minimizing irritation and stress from exfoliation and other aging factors, this healing moisturizer protects dermal proteins, renews and softens the skin. Each delightful dab contributes to the building of healthy, supple new cells to make the skin glow with vitality.

This much is highly concentrated and can go a long way. Dot the cream lightly onto face and neck. Gentle tap with the fingers to spread over the skin. Do not rub in or use too much.

Special use: For irritated, sunburned or damaged skin – moisturize with Refresh, then apply Rebuild lightly over the affected spot to soothe, heal and protect as it nourishes the damaged skin. For men, use a small amount to go over the damage area done to your skin by the razor as it microscopically nicks the skin at the hair shaft.

Summary: 1. Natural skin repair, healing and rejuvenation. 2. gives skin vitality 3. protect, renew and soften skin 4. Minimise irritation and stress from exfoliation and other aging factors  5. Building of healthy, supple new cells.

Containing a plethora of fortifying and healing properties, this moisturizing cleanser protects multiple layers of your skin with rich antioxidants, while aiding your skin in producing its own moisture. Lather away dirt, oils and pollutants that accumulate throughout the day, leaving your skin soft and squeaky clean.

Ingredients: Distilled water, glucose polymers, vegetable oils, glycerides, witch hazel, saponins, D-beta-glucosamine, D-beta-fructan, honey, L-alpha lecithin, aloe vera, D-alpha tocopherol, spin trap, essential oils. With such purity of ingredients, it is best kept in a dry, drainable soap dish, away from heat and continuous moisture to keep the bar from dissolving.

If too much of a hassle or you need to travel often, pick up the liquid form for convenience.

General use: Splash warm water onto face and neck. Wet the bar or drop 2-3 pumps in your hands with warm water and work up a light lather. Gently smooth over face and neck with light, circular motions for about a minute. Scrubbing is not necessary. Thoroughly rinse with warm water.

Special use: For ladies, remove makeup like waterproof mascara, add a few drops of olive oil to the lather and gently massage lashes with eyes closed. Rinse well. For men, it not only sets up for a clean shave but the nutritious ingredients also soothe and help heal microscopic cuts. Teens and children can use to remove daily impurities and keep young skin healthy and supple.

#5 REFINE – Evening Moisturizer (Evening Step 3)

Pores are formed by a folding-in of the epidermis into the dermis. The skin cells that line the pore (keratinocytes) are continuously shed, and when mixed with sebum clog the pore further. This is the precursor to acne. If oil builds up inside pores, or if tissue surrounding the pore becomes agitated, they may appear larger.

Blanket your skin with silky nutrients that promote youth enhancing activities while you sleep. This formulation gently exfoliates dead skin cells with non-chemically buffered 8% L-lactic acid, while it decongests and tightens pores, reducing the visible signs of aging. This pampering formula helps to strengthen the skin by keeping the collagen fibrils from becoming brittle as it sips in moisture throughout the night. As a result of conditioning the epidermal cells, you will awaken with softer, smoother, more resilient skin and reduced fine lines and wrinkles.

Ingredients: Distilled water, milk capilic/capric triglycerides, milk caprilate/capric, cetearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, PEG 150 stearate, L-lactic acid, shea butter, D-beta-glucosamine, aminoguanidine, essential oils, grape seed extract, jasminol.

General use: After cleansing with the Betapure and misting with Refresh, dispense a dime-sized drop of Refine and lightly tap onto the cheeks and neck with your fingertips whilst the skin is still damp. Overstimulation is not necessary.

USAGE GUIDE

+ Anti-aging home peel. Use Revive (1), Refresh (2) and Rebuild (3) in the morning and Restore (4), Refresh (2) and Refine (5) in the evening. Beginners may need to adopt this regime for a maximum of 4 weeks at a time and let the skin rests for at least 2-3 weeks before repeating the cycle. If any serious breakout occurs, discontinue using Revive (1) and Refine (5) while skin is actively peeling. Whilst undergoing any exfoliation procedure, avoid sun exposure as skin peeling can cause hyper-pigmentation.

+ Normal/Dry/Sensitive/Combination skin. The skin is dry and dehydrated with dull tone, fine lines and flakes usually due to a declining function of sebaceous glands. As a result, wrinkles and age spots are easily formed. Extra protection is required and may need to repair and rehydrate to plump out fine lines and change the skin texture soft and supple.

Use Restore (4), Refresh (2) and Rebuild (3) daily in the morning and evening.  For anti-aging benefits, apply Refine (5) in the evening in place of Rebuild 4-5 times a week.  When skin needs extra exfoliation, wash with Revive (1) in the morning in place of Restore (4) 2-3 times a week and occasional use for those with dry/sensitive skin.

For extra protection, apply the sun block, RENEW. If there is any pigmentation and uneven skin tone, apply brightening serum REVEAL in the night. Mask REJUVENATE can boost the skin's moisture level quickly.

+ Oily/Problem skin. Oily skin is often due to overproduction of sebum, large pores or blackheads, and most prone to acne. Poor resistance makes it vulnerable to viral infection. Thus, regular cleansing is needed to maintain the right pH balance of the skin.

Use Revive (1), Refresh (2) and Rebuild (3) daily in the morning to follow by Restore (4), Refresh and Rebuild (3) daily in the evening. Make sure only tiny amount of Rebuild is used after misting from toner and before drying out.  Oily skin has to be treated with care to prevent oil glands from secreting more sebum.

For anti-aging benefits, apply Refine (5) in the evening in place of Rebuild occasionally.
Also avoid foods that are fatty, oily and sugary. Opt for more alkaline and fiber food instead.

+ Each formula works synergistically within the Toujours system to reveal your natural beauty and create a luminous glow. As much as our body needs nutraceuticals to stay healthy, our skin needs cosmoceuticals for the healthy look. Basically, we ‘detox’ with the Betapure Bar/liquid, ‘balance’ with the Toner, and ‘nourish’ with the Serum. This series can attempt to treat different skin problems including acne, dark patch, oily skin, enlarged pores, pigmentation, rash, blackheads and whiteheads. Most of these are signs of malnourished skin needing treatment.

+ As all the products do not use chemical preservatives, they need to be stored properly to ensure a maximum shelf life. The bottles should always be tightly closed and place in a cool, dry area away from heat and constant moisture.

+ With appropriate usage amounts, the products can last at least 2 months. Application and frequency of use will vary with different skin types. Hence, it is cost-effective compared to most of the brands out there.
